So, this is it everyone. Goodbye from Three Speech. Over the years (sniff) we published over 1,500 stories, and you lot left over 35,000 comments. Thank you all for sticking with us for so long. Thanks also for all your comments (both positive and negative), questions, suggestions for stories, news tips, solicited and unsolicited articles, friendly emails, photos, videos, tattoos and cakes. Further thanks to those of you with sites of your own who linked to us and let us link to you.
All is not lost, you still have your PS3s and PSPs to keep you busy. Also, remember that there’s an EU blog on the way – which is something you’ve been calling for for a long time on Three Speech, so it just goes to show that Sony were listening to us. Make sure that the community that grew around Three Speech carries on there and that you continue to tell SCEE what you think. The future address will be http://blog.eu.playstation.com, but in the mean time check http://eu.playstation.com for regular updates.
Quick thanks to everyone who has been involved behind the scenes as well… The SCE UK PR team, Andy, Paul, Jessica and David from Ramp/Crowd DNA. Our intrepid writers Keith Stuart, Steve Boxer, Keri Allan, Chris Burke, Jon Porter, Tom Eccles, Paul Clayton and many more. Pete for his tireless development and design work and Duncan and Alasdair for the hosting.
We’re off to dismantle the underground lair/hollowed-out volcano/space-station/submarine/haunted castle headquarters that this blog has been published from over the years, cover our tracks and vanish into the night. Love y’all…

Comment by Nathaniel — Apr 17, 2009 @ 3:20 pm
Goodbye ThreeSpeech you will be missed, I feel a bit like when your favourite tele program gets cancelled or something
I hope the EU blog can capture the spirit of the community ThreeSpeech built up, but I’m not holding my breath.
All we wanted is for SCEE to appear more with stories on ThreeSpeech, not to actually close it down and replace it altogether! But oh well, what’s done is done. Can you tell us how long ThreeSpeech.com and it’s content will stay active? And what will happen to the domain when the site it completely taken offline? Also will you or any of the writers etc have anything to do with the new Official blog or is it a completely new team?
If I were to try a to find a silver lining in this grey cloud it would be that the new website domain for the EU blog is (currently at least) allowed through my works firewall! I think the blog.eu prefix confuses it (the US version at blog.us is also allowed), whereas http://www.playstation.com, uk.playstation.com and community.eu.playstation.com (the official forum) are all blocked.
P.S. What a class last comment to leave us on!

So, are you going to the official blog now, or are you launching a new site, or joining others, or what’s the deal?
Comment by Dana — Apr 17, 2009 @ 3:35 pm
I was wondering the same thing as Dana?
Is the official blog going to have some/all of the people who worked on ThreeSpeech or will it be all new?
Comment by Mace — Apr 17, 2009 @ 3:41 pm
Yes - big thanks to James needed too!
Comment by Jessica — Apr 17, 2009 @ 3:50 pm
Personally, I’d rather keep a semi-official blog that’s chilled out and friendly, than have an entirely official blog that’s over-crowded and run by people that tend to look down their nose at the community, the community that they’re supposed to nurture.
The masses bitched and whined that they never got any answers, that they didn’t want to speak to the middlemen (ThreeSpeech) and demanded to speak to the Big-wigs at Sony. Now they’re just a little closer, and lets face it, they’ll never get to speak to the actual PSN/Sony staff they want, they’ll only ever get the PR staff
that are paid to deal with the community.
So now ThreeSpeech is closing down, and the community is moving, but it won’t change. The community will still bitch, moan, whinge and whine instead of being thankful for what they’ve got.
You’ve done a damned good job over the years, ThreeSpeech, and I’m another reader that’s sorry to see you guys (and girls) go.

It’s been an absolute pleasure guys!
Here are some of my favourite articles from Three Speech…
The article about the 3Rooms event with Andy Serkis as the surprise guest - https://threespeech.com/blog/2007/09/3rooms-photographs-from-the-night/
The article about MobileTone and his PS3 tattoo (take no notice of the comments ‘Tone - I thought it was pretty awesome!) -
https://threespeech.com/blog/2008/03/hes-only-gone-and-done-it-worlds-first-ps3-tattoo/
The Condemned 2 competition where the gorgeous Emily models the T-shirt prize! - https://threespeech.com/blog/2008/04/condemned-2-competition/
The launch day articles a few of us submitted after hurring back from the shops with our PS3s on 23rd March 2007. (https://threespeech.com/blog/2007/03/)
…And lots more! I’m really going to miss this place!

@reakt, some good memories there, I completely forgot about ‘tone getting a PS3 tattoo! I visited the site back then but I think I was still a lurker (or posted under another non-identifying name) as I can’t see a comment from me. Some of them are quite insulting!
Mobiletone, do you still have the PS3 tattoo? Did you later add to the design to change it to something other than PS3 as insinuated in one of the comments?
Probably the things I’m going to remember most about this site in years to come (just because I’ve got something tangible to serve as a reminder) are winning a copy of Resident Evil Apocalypse on Blu-ray in a competition and getting an early promotional copy of KillZone 2 for doing a preview of Heavy Rain!
But there’s been lot’s of others that I can’t remember I’m sure!

I have posted in this thread already, E-ROLE, but just to have some consistency in the lull between Three Speech closing & the new Blog starting, my comment has entered the moderation queue & may well stay there forever if nobody at Three Speech Towers is on-hand now to review/release it.
The news I posted was about a Star Trek event in PlayStation Home (quoting a link to 1upGamers {dot} com, but it is too late now as it will be over by now).
I did try to post a comment on your site, ‘tone, about “Free Realms”, but I didn’t have any of the log-ins supported.

@Mr. Amigo, you both certainly scared the living daylights out of me until I saw you both pop online, and then with 1:30 minutes to go I saw Mr. Sketch. I thought there is now way he can boot into KZ2 and into a match in that time, but you both did.
Will check for the KZ2 patch shortly.

Yep. 1.24 is available for download. Grabbing it right now.
I’m guessing the servers might be a bit laggy tonight to to patch downloads.

Btw, even though it is only 50+MB the Sony serves are running super duper slow. So download the patch ASAP, or it wont be ready by the time the clan match starts.

TSR Clan fixture list for next week:
Monday 27th - 9pm - TSR vs BTH (6vs6)
Monday 27th - 9:45pm - BTH vs TSR (8vs8)
Tuesday 28th - 10:00pm - AVF vs TSR (8vs8)
Let’s hope we have enough members - if you can’t get into the 6vs6 on Monday, make sure you stay around for the 8vs8 game just after it!

why are we playing hem twice? Wait, shouldn’t I also be asking this in the TSR HQ?
Comment by E-ROLE — Apr 24, 2009 @ 1:09 pm
@E-ROLE, I think fixture congestion/team’s dropping out is to blame.
Comment by mrsatansdojo — Apr 24, 2009 @ 1:33 pm
@ E-ROLE, it’s the home and away match, we have now played all teams at least once now so it’s time for the opposite fixture to be played.
This week we were due to play AVF at Home and BTH Away to complete the ‘first half’ of fixtures. Next week we were due to start the league in reverse so AVF Away and BTH at Home. However this week we had a Home match from last week to play that got cancelled and the AVF Home match as scheduled, BTH asked for our Away match to be bumped to next week to play along side our scheduled Home match - hence the double header (which I believe is Baseball terminology for a similar scenario).
Let’s hope we perform a bit better next week than this. 0-14 is not a good weekly average lol!

CAMPAIGN TO KEEP TS ALIVE STARTS HERE. SONY NEEDS TO LISTEN
Comment by Buzzin — Apr 26, 2009 @ 11:38 am
Actually, just one more rant before this blog ends:
@ “R”:
The voice that “would otherwise not be listened to” is actually the voice of all those disappointed and disillusioned PlayStation fans who have been in dismay for the past two years, since the PS3 was released, at Sony’s tactics and utter contempt for this marketing region that UK/Euroland and seeing their favourite brand in decline.
If you think a delayed launch, an extortionate launch price (and still the most expensive console in any territory), no initial DualShock, no backwards compatibility, delayed PSN releases and delayed Home are all forgiveable (not to mention forgettable), then you are a bigger fool than your misguided loyalty and aimlessly blind comments.
It’s not about being “unpleasant”, it’s about remembering the truth and keeping to one’s convictions…Something that definitely always gets lost on the Net, and you showing the perfect example.
Over & Out (really).
Comment by Zed Zee — Apr 27, 2009 @ 12:39 am
Personally i’m gonna miss Zed’s banter…I will admit not everything commented on do I agree - but like has been said before..just having that ‘opinion’ and yet being able to avoid an outright flame war within this blog has definitely been one of the highlights.

Criteria being:

3. Bundle the DualShock 3 with the standard console package.”

@ ZedZee, none of that comes anywhere close to the massive “Red Ring of Death” problem, or the ‘ok we got it wrong HDMI is a good idea after all’ relaunch starting with the Elite, or most recently the E74 errors (or indeed the scrapping of their original model after just 4 years). If an appalling 30%-50% failure rate of launch models is forgivable and forgettable, a failure rate that according to some insider sources MS were fully aware of before launch but chose not to delay because they knew the only chance they had was to launch before the PS3, then anything you mentioned up there is as well (and before you say it being forced to offer a 3 year warranty for a problem you knew about in the first place under threat of legal action does not make it ‘ok’).
As for your specific points, firstly, the brand is not in decline, especially in Europe where it is showing year on year increases and has now pretty much equalled the 360 for sales despite the 360 having an 16 month head start and being a cheaper initial purchase - people seem to have a funny idea of products in decline. And what happens when the likes of God of War III launches or it receives an eventual price drop (which in Europe could be as late as March 2010 and it would still be at the SAME point in it’s European lifecycle as the 360 was when it got it’s big price cut - you know the one that stopped it being outsold month by month in the US by the PS3 and the one that makes MS’s ‘compared to this time last year’ PR comparisons pointless marketing drivel).
As for the overall price, that argument is old and very tired, as the saying goes you get what you pay for - and if you try and kit out the 360 to equivalent spec you pay a whole lot more - stripping down a console and selling bits of it as expensive proprietary add-ons is not the same as being cheap, likewise selling a last generation console with a novelty controller does not make it good value (arguably the Wii is the biggest rip-off of all current gen consoles, but it doesn’t stop it selling). You also can’t compare the price of a 41 month old console with a 26 month old console - speak to me about price after the PS3 receives it’s year 3 price cut.
Remember ‘marketing’ figures are not ‘real’ figures, if you want to ‘remember the truth’ then every comparison needs to be time adjusted - and when you do that the PS3 is actually outselling the 360 - which is exactly why they chose to ignore the RROD issue and launch anyway, as it’s the only thing they have to work with in their Press Releases. To illustrate the point, when OnLIVE launches will they say after it’s first month on sale “OnLIVE is a failure as it’s life to date sales this generation are 50,000 units with a software attach rate of 1.1 compared with 30 Million sales and a 8.1 attach rate for the Xbox 360″ - it’s a more extreme example but it’s exactly what they do month on month when they ‘compare’ the 360 to the PS3. Microsoft’s perceived success this gen is down purely to smoke and mirrors marketing tricks combined with a large helping of arrogance and an open cheque book.
As for the launch date I don’t think any of the PlayStation consoles launched simultaneously worldwide, and no one had a problem with that before? Why would you want a constrained supply spread thinly around the world leading to scalpers exploiting desperate parents on eBay over Christmas anyway (read Wii launch)? Regarding regional differences, how long did it take MS to bring their video store to Europe, and how long have European 360 owners been having the same whinge about US 360 owners being treated better? The fact is Sony do more than anyone to cater for Europe, even MS have admitted that and admitted it’s something they’re trying to address with the 360 (also know as carbon-copying established SCEE franchises like Buzz, SingStar and EyeToy!), this unique affinity with the European tastes translates directly with strong sales in the region.
Regarding the DualShock situation, that is once again a classic example of Xbox fanboys living in 2006, the DualShock 3 is now standard so it’s a non-issue. It was obvious from the outset to anyone with half a brain that the DualShock could not be launched due to legal reasons and as soon as those were resolved it would launch separately. As much as I love my DualShock 3, it’s not as if it’s essential to the game - I still know people that haven’t bothered upgrading their original SIXAXIS. It’s certainly less of an issue than having to buy two halves of a controller! Also I seem to recall the original PlayStation controller underwent a far more radical change (adding both rumble and analogue sticks) and I don’t recall that stopping many people from buying it.
I could go on to continue to pick your fanboy attitude to pieces, but frankly I’ve got better things to be getting on with. From the day this blog launched you were a blinkered fanboy troll that had nothing constructive to contribute other than continual Sony bashing, and to the day it died you continue to do so - so at least you’re consistent! The fact is your logic, as with most fanboys, is deeply flawed and devoid of reason. Feel free to reply, I could argue with you all day for the simple reason that logic and intelligence always beats fanboyism!
P.S. You also need to realise Sony and Microsoft operate completely differently and are motivated by different goals. Microsoft still need to prove their brand and will pay anything to do so (in fact the amount of money they’ve thrown at the 360 you’ve got to wonder if it will be worth it in the long run), they also have little first party development so again will pay top dollar for any scrap of exclusive DLC offered to them. Sony have the brand and they have the 1st party software, they want the profit. So between the different goals, the different pricing structures, and the different launch dates, it makes almost any kind of direct comparison laughably pointless. Here’s an example to prove what I mean:
Microsoft would pay $20M to develop a game, and $60M to market it, in order to sell 8 Million units and make a big song and dance about how great that game was and how great the 360 is.
Sony would pay $60M to develop 3 games, and $20M to market all 3 games the PS3 and the PSP, and then be perfectly content for each one to sell 2-3 million and turn a profit.
You tell me which is better? For me I’d take the PS3’s rich selection of exclusive 1st party software over having a single defining franchise and DLC for multi-platform games any day of the week. I’d also take quiet rock solid hardware, free online, built-in Wi-Fi, and blu-ray playback over cheap unreliable noisy hardware, online subscriptions, expensive add-ons and DVD playback. It makes me laugh that 360 fanboys look at game numbers sold and say “that game still hasn’t sold as much as Halo3, Xbox rulez” without ever playing the game! It reeks of insecurity, personally I don’t care how many copies it sells as long as I’ve bought it and I’ve enjoyed it.
Comment by Apnomis — Apr 27, 2009 @ 10:19 am
@ Apnomis
Nothing like a bit of ZZ to get you fired up for tonights double header. lol!
top post mate, really quite informative.
In my opinion I am more than happy to pay a little extra (if indeed I am actually paying extra in the long run) to play quality games (particularly 1st party ones) on a quality console.
I also think that in terms of demographics (excuse my massive generalisation here) that PS3 owners are probably a little older, more affluent and importantly, have grown up with the brand. I have owned all Sony home consoles within roughly 6-9 months of their initial release and I have never once been disappointed. Whilst I have owned Sega, Nintendo and Microsoft consoles during that 15/16 year period, Playstations have always been my ‘primary’ consoles.
All three have taken a year or two to bed in, but that’s the thing. Once they do (and I believe the PS3 has) reach that point, for me the quality of experience just grows and grows. Look at games developed for ps1 & 2 initially, then after 2, 4 and 6 years.
Also as a general rule, the games released across all three consoles have become more and more ’sophisticated’ for lack of a better word. The games I want to play now aren’t the same as when I was 13 (although I fondly remember seeing Ridge Racer for the first time and nearly choking on my Cheerios), and I think Sony recognises this.
At the same time they cater for a wider audience by creating social games like Buzz and Singstar, which are truly innovative products (hello Lips, Scene it, etc…)
I want someone to have a go at a proper narrative (Heavy Rain), I want to shoot strangers and fanpages in the head (Killzone 2), I want someone to take Tomb Raider/IndianaJones to the next level (Uncharted 1 & 2), I want to be a badass God (God of War 3), I want to drive shiny, shiny cars (Gran Turismo) and I want to spend 5,000,609 hours on Final Fantasy 13.
I suppose the PS3 just feels a little less faddy in in terms of first party games and focus.
I’m not saying Zed Zee is wrong in his opinion, just that for me and my friends the things that nark him off are really a non-issue for us, and I suspect many other PS3 owners.

InFamous’ Uncharted Beta NOT exclusive to Play.com in UK [UPDATED]
Friday, 01 May 2009 10:25
UPDATED STORY - Sony UK has let us know that the below information is untrue. Play.com will not exclusively give Uncharted 2 Beta keys away in the UK.
“The offer will actually be available from a number of select online retailers in the UK,” a SCE-UK representative told us.
When we know which retailers will be involved in the InFamous/Uncharted 2 promotion, we’ll let you know.
ORIGINAL STORY
Play.com has acquired the exclusive rights to the Uncharted 2 multiplayer Beta code included with InFamous.
Following the electrifying announcement that Sucker Punch’s InFamous will come with a code to Uncharted 2: Among Thieves’ multiplayer Beta, which we had cannily predicted, Play.com has revealed that they will be the UK’s store to exclusively hand out the codes.
“Pre-Order inFamous from Play.com and receive an exclusive code to access the ‘Uncharted 2: Among Thieves’ Beta. Codes and instructions will be sent before the Beta commences (date to be confirmed),” Play.com writes on the InFamous product page.
As far as the US is concerned, the Beta code will be available on all InFamous discs purchased from any store, with one catch; only the first batch of discs will include a code, so you better get snappy with your purchasing if you want a chance.
From what we can gather, the US model differs from Play.com, who will not only have exclusive rights to hand out Beta codes, but they can almost guarantee that you’ll get one before the Beta begins this June.
InFamous will release in the UK on May 29th, and on May 26th in the US.

I’ve just read a surprising announcement about the Ghostbusters Video Game, at the last minute Sony have taken over the publishing rights from Atari and the game will be released exclusively on the PS3 and PS2 in June!
Apparently Atari will still be releasing a 360 version at some point in the future, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that version slowly faded away in favour of the more luctrative Wii version.
www . mcvuk . com/news/34186/Sony-to-publish-Ghostbusters
It’s about time Sony looked at the ‘bigger picture’, for too long their various divisions have worked independently of each other - since Sony owns the rights to Ghostbusters you would have expected a PlayStation timed-exclusive release of a Ghostbusters game from the outset…

“Ghostbusters: The Video Game” is launching exclusively in June within Europe on the PS3 & PS2 consoles.
The title is still being released simultaneously on the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, Nintendo DS & PC (Windows) formats, on 16 June 2009 in North America.
The PSP version was canned earlier this year, but now Sony have control again this is back on the release schedules for “Autumn 2009″.

IGN may have broken an embargo to post this review of inFAMOUS. A small excert from the review says…
“In December, I played Infamous for the first time and told you that it was awesome. Five months later, I’m standing by that statement and backing it up with about 30 hours of playtime. Cole’s powers are cool, the graphic novel cutscenes are stunning, the story is intriguing, and the city is alive.”

200 comments and still no sign of an EU Blog! Do you reckon we’ll make it to 300 before it launches (knowing SCEE, we probably will!).
Thanks for keeping us updated with web news CB, the guys at CrowdDNA should have handed you the keys on their way out to allow us to post (unofficial) news until the EU blog arrives.
On the subject of that Home trailer, my experience with Home’s (actually really rather good) AI game - Xi - has obviously increased my latent ability to spot clues. If you look closely at the graffiti on the wall at around 25 seconds it is actually a PSN Redeem Code!
It doesn’t work on an EU account, but if you have a US account it unlocks 2 free Home items. I also downloaded the free Chamber room while I was there and visited the numerous Home locations (their new Central Plaza is now much nicer than ours, and why can’t we walk around and sit next to people when watching things in the Cinema?).
I hope SCEE’s version of Home catches up to the US Home soon, as that trailer shows it’s actually beginning to look like a viable ’selling point’ for the PS3 even though it’s still in beta. At least we have Xi (anyone been down the Manhole yet? Having to change your appearance to fool the Home ‘Face Recognition’ security system is hilarious!)
I just wish they had a better way of ’streaming’ the environments - those blue loading bars drive me mad! If GTAIV, inFAMOUS, Uncharted etc can stream complex worlds seamlessly why can’t Home?
Also I really wish they would change the interface, the stupid Domino World Map is fugly and not intuitive. What happened to the slick interface of the E3 Alpha version? And why take you out of the World to relocate? Why not have a some kind of teleport pads to each area that you just walk on to relocate (i.e. like the Xi Hub?). Why are they so insistent on making Home realistic? Why not make it a vision of Earth 50-100 years from now Star Trek style?
While I’m on this impromptu rant about Home, why for the love of God can’t you have custom music? Some of the environments (like the EA Complex) are deathly quiet, it gives Home an atmosphere akin to a morgue! Either stream background noises into all spaces or allow music - you can buy some Headphone costume accessories, why not make them functional? So you see someone with headphones you know they’re listening to their personal music.
Ok last thing, on the subject of media streaming - where the heck are the Photo frames for your apartment, the TV to play your vids, and the Hi-Fi to play your music? The whole idea of the private space was that you could invite friends back and show them photos or videos or music they have on their HDD - as if you had invited them to your real house!
Why pay £4 for a new personal space if you can’t actually put anything personal into it?
I’m secretly hoping Xi is actually the radically redesigned release candidate of Home that includes many of these fixes/improvements - it makes sense that the finished product is locked away in a vault with the software testers after all… find the missing tester and allow her to sign off the release of the next version etc. I know, I know, wishful thinking, but still nice idea!
P.S. Congrats JS, way to snipe the 200th post!

Everyone knows that I hate the Unreal Engine 3, because it just wasn’t built with the PS3 in mind, hence why 99.99% of UE3 games on the PS3 are shiite.
The guys over at Crytek, seem to have taken the strengths of both platforms into consideration and this is what they have to say…
“If the game’s shader-heavy it runs a bit faster on 360; if it’s compute-heavy with physics and particles, then the SPUs take over and it’s a bit quicker on PS3.”

@ dojo, I don’t think that’s the UK store update as it’s missing things like the Capcom vs Marvel 2 Demo, Fat Priness/inFamous/Uncharted 2 videos, Pain character, HAWX gamepack, Riddick Map Pack etc. Also I can’t see a trailer for R&C:ACIT on our store?
As for the inFamous reviews, most are very positive, there’s always one that likes to be different, one that goes in with the lowest score to stand out, look tough, and attract hits. For inFamous that dubious honour goes to Eurogamer who gave it just 70% (a good 17% lower than the current Metacritic average) their harsh verdict is:
There is more charm to inFamous than Cole’s face and voice suggest, but basking in the glow of the end credits, there are also a lot of painful memories to recall; of too many missions that funnel you into shooting galleries, of difficulty spikes and enemy-spamming, and of staring at the upgrades page rather glumly, aware that for the most part you’re only being invited to make things strike harder or across a broader range.

Speaking of Eurogamer, I was just sent this article (
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/final-fantasy-xiii-how-will-it-work-on-360-article?page=1 ) which analyses the FF XIII PS3 demo and how the final game might work on the Xbox 360.
Maybe I’m being biased, but to me it reads like an Xbox 360 evangelism article.
Which sort of fits in with Eurogamer giving inFAMOUS 70/100.
It seems to me that there is a constant underlying tone of disdain towards the PS3 in the guy’s writing style. So much for objective journalism.
Anyway, I downloaded the inFAMOUS demo last night and played it for a bit. From a technical perspective, it is a very polished & impressive game. Impressions on game-play will come this week-end as I take it through its paces and take turns being Good, then Evil.

Yeah, been reading lot’s of previews on Heavy Rain, it’s looking and sounding really good - sounding exactly like what I was hoping. Definitely a day 1 buy for me, here are a couple more:
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/985/985796p1.html
http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/695812/Heavy-Rain-Hands-On-Preview.html
I love the way 360 fanboys shrug it off as being crap because it’s different and dares to innovate instead of conform to tired FPS game design stereotypes. It’s funny that their tune changes when their chosen console decides to copy these innovative ideas further down the road!
@ Cart, I also read that article (or something similar posted on another site) and agree it just sounds like pro-360 flamebait. How can they make a sweeping statement that the 360 will handle it better in some places when the 360 version isn’t even built yet according to the developer?! If it’s strength is in it’s art assets then surely having the space to have uncompressed textures and audio on a blu-ray would be of huge benefit?
I predict fanboy meltdown when FFXIII (eventually) get’s released - be it the number of discs, possible installs, microscopic differences in graphics, japanese voice options, delays in release, extra features, or any other petty argument you can think of. Whether the PS3 version ends up better, the 360 version ends up better, or even if both versions are identical - any scenario will lead to fanboy arguments!!!!

@Mr. Satan : Interview with Heavy Rain developers can be watched here - http://www.viddler.com/explore/sceablog/videos/368
Worth noting is that what we are seeing at the moment is *alpha* code, so there is still lots for them to work on game wise and lots of polish. Hopefully the voice acting will be sorted by the time it is released.

inFAMOUS demo impressions : Solid gameplay, easy to pick up. Some texture pop-in, which I’m not happy about, but generally very very fun. I think this will be a pre-order and to boot you get the Uncharted 2 multi-player codes.

My worry is that the developers are using Unreal Engine for this MMO and it is already running badly on the PS3, according to that article. Sony really need to get their inhouse teams to use anything but Unreal Engine for the final product. I would still use Unreal Engine for prototyping, but not for a final game.

I don’t know if you’ve been following this, but there was a 2-page ad taken out in Famitsu to announce the launch of an announcement website, specifically:
http://www.konami.jp/kojima_pro/next
This site has been counting to to a ‘clue’ only to reset to another countdown.
Now right from the beginning this was rumoured to be MGS5 given the 5 that flashed up and the key words in the sites code - “Hideo Kojima”, “MGS”, “METAL GEAR”, “NEXT”, “game”, “Konami”, “Kojima game”, “KJP”, “Kojima Production”.
As the countdown went on more letters were revealed - an eE3 for example, and the thunder and lightning got worse. This leads to natural speculation that it is a Raiden game as Raiden is Japanese for Thunder & Lightning.
There is also a date of 30th April 2007 which flashes up if you watch long enough - this (according to die hard fans of the series) is the date Raiden met Rosemary.
With the latest, and final, countdown that went live around 2am last night (British time) we now see an image of Big Boss (or someone looking a lot like Big Boss), confirming that this is most definitely a countdown to a brand new Metal Gear game, but somewhat confusing in the fact Big Boss (as he appears in the image) and Raiden (as a cyborg) are from different time periods in the franchise.
There are also screen shots leaked from the latest issue of Famitsu that shows both Big Boss and Cyborg Raiden, along with a heavily sensored interview with Kojima himself.
The flashing letters now include: e P 5 3 R E (not necessarily in that order, I can’t remember which order they’re in now but I don’t think the E is with the 3 anymore, though I could be wrong)
But this is where things turn murky, and it’s leaving me with a bad taste in my mouth, earlier this month someone on Twitter who is allegedly very close to proceedings at E3 leaked numerous bits of info about Microsoft’s conference, the two of note were:
The big surprise unveil this year will be Metal Gear Solid 4 Oxide, the 360 exclusive version of MGS4. Plus a brand new Kojima project that no one else knows about yet.
Now at first I disregarded this as complete rubbish but there are two other separate bits of info that back this up - 1) MGS4 PS3 is rumoured to be getting a trophy patch very soon, this is relevant as it would make sense if Achievements had already been thought up for the 360 version. 2) And much more significantly the final countdown on that Kojima website ends on June 1st - the day of Microsoft’s E3 conference (Sony’s is a day later).
I have this terrible sinking feeling that Microsoft, thanks probably to bags of cash, will stun the E3 audience with the announcement of a 360 version of MGS4 this year and exclusive rights to MGS5!!! This would be far worse than last years poaching of FFXIII.
Of course some rumours counter this, the Sony Blog have hinted in the past about upcoming exciting announcements around Metal Gear, and some have pointed out that there is now a P, a S/5, and 3 in the flashing letters on the teaser site, and finally according to some sources the Famitsu article about it is in the PS3 section.
I guess we will find out for sure next week, I just have this feeling that it might be at Microsoft’s Press Conference! I just hope if it is, it’s just a day and date poach like FFXIII and not proper exclusivity! That would be very unfair to the fans of the franchise and would be a real slap in the face from Kojima.
If it did happen Xbots will hail it as a killer blow to the PS3, I personally regard it as a very synical move from Microsoft in order to force PS3 owners (many of whom became PS3 owners for MGS4) to pick up a 360 if only for playing more MGS. Is it really so hard for them to win the console war on their own merits using their own ideas and innovation? Xbots may say their system is great, but from where I’m standing most of the new and fresh ideas and IPs are coming to PS3, whereas the 360 is focusing (as usual) on Halo and Gears of War, and buying their way into as many established PlayStation franchises as possible or failing that doing a clone of them (Lips, Scene It etc).
Whatever happens this years E3 is going to be very interesting, the buzz around it is akin to the E3’s where new consoles are announced. It could be one of the pivotal moments of this console generation…
Comment by Apnomis — May 27, 2009 @ 11:46 am
I made a prediction on my twitter account a week or so ago, that MGS 5 will be a timed exclusive on the Xbox 360. Which fits in rather well with the whole June 1 end of timer thing.
But I just thought of another possibility. Maybe the MGS 5 reveal is designed to coincide with the Microsoft keynote, to diminish Microsoft’s thunder and in fact it will be another PS3 exclusive.
Remember that past MGSes were also available on PC and the old XBox. I personally don’t mind MGS being a timed exclusive ( it would never be exclusive exclusive ) because I think that Sony has enough First and Third party exclusives to keep its fan base occupied.

Highlighs include:
* The ‘Join Friend’ option has been changed so that the player can automatically join a friend’s faction and squad – even if faction balancing is on. In addition, squads and their factions are now persistent over multiple games, so friends can keep playing together continuously.
* allows players to switch factions manually if the factions are unbalanced.
* new High Precision option

remember - snake only began rapidly aging over a short period so there is every chance this is “solid” and raiden as they were BETWEEN MGS2 and 4 i.e. when snake jumped off arsenal after Ray and when raiden first converted to the cyborg body.
It could work!

Don’t have to be playing the same character in the same place, afterall in MGS2 you were both in a tanker AND then Big Shell with a change in player character!
One thing that folk haven’t mentioned that may be VERY prudent to remember - there are more than 2 snakes!
Solidus was raidens father after all (even if adopted)
sSolidus looks exactly like the other only OLDER so it may very well be Raiden flashbacking on his mentor?
I still actually hold out that Kojima is winding us all up and that it is in fact ZOE3 - and he’s just being mean and twisted by these teaser images.

Is it by any chance Sonic the hedgehog?

Well, I haven’t backed down at all - I’m avoiding this generation of Sony hardware altogether. I’m still enjoying my PS2 and PSP games though - these were hardware units from back when Sony was still sane. Although, I might be considering buying an Elite, now that it’s at a very enticing price point.
As for Sony, well, their continuing woes and third position in the market should definitely tell you that they’re still ignoring you and the rest of their consumer base…In other words, no, they haven’t backed down.
Comment by Zed Zee — Oct 25, 2009 @ 10:40 pm
@ Apnomis (136):
Oh, I missed that one! Thanks for your reply, but I’m not a Microsoft fan either, so you’re giving yourself RSI there for no reason. Just because I like the price of the Elite, it doesn’t mean I’m going to necessarily buy it, although if I was thinking of a console, right now…honestly, it would be an Elite.
It seems that you’re always siding with Sony, despite their grave mistakes in both marketing and product design. Yet, you and many others on here and elsewhere seem to blindly follow them and justify your overpriced purchases every single time.
You would do better to read something like the comments on Eurogamer. Then, maybe, just maybe, you might get a more balanced view and an idea of how people really feel about Sony’s blunders.
Comment by Zed Zee — Oct 25, 2009 @ 10:50 pm
@ mrsatansdojo (137):
Why on earth wouldn’t some of Sony’s decisions, that directly affect your pocket, be a “non-issue” for you and others on here, I don’t know.
I know it’s a bit of a salt rub, but just how much was that delayed PS3 launch price again…?
Comment by Zed Zee — Oct 25, 2009 @ 11:00 pm
I see you are back (again), Zed Zee, because you could not find anybody on the Official EU PlayStation Blog to argue with.
Seriously, if you are now thinking of buying a Microsoft Xbox 360 Elite… may I suggest you look at the Super Elite instead?
Or a black Wii console.
Or even a PSP Go.
Each of these consoles will give you something (else) to complain about for the sake of it.
See you on the next generation unofficial blog site.
In the meantime I am enjoying whatever console I play on as it is the individual games that make the ownership worthwhile.

I think the point I was probably trying to make (I have long since forgotten to be honest) is that for me personally & possibly a good chunk of Sony’s audience - higher disposable income levels means less concern over price (to a point granted).

Since this is the last (and most active) thread on ThreeSpeech (and frankly, I’m surprised people are still adding comments on here), I will continue to contribute my opinion.
As for the Elite or whatever, I was saying that IF I was going to go for a new console it would be of the Microsoft variety. I have no idea what the “Super” features are, nor do I really care much.
I’m very much enjoying my PS2 and PSPslim right now, thank you very much.
@ mrsatansdojo:
You mean higher disposable income and a wanton desire to impart with your money because you believe that you have no choice…even when presented with a £525 launch price tag?? No wonder Sony has been laughing all the way to the bank, since the (delayed) launch day!
Glad to know that there are lots of different tiers to this “higher disposable income” category, as some seem to have more sense than others.

Comment by Zed Zee — Oct 28, 2009 @ 1:16 pm
Which console was £525 at launch? Even the PS3 that you hate so much was £100 cheaper than that!
The “Super Elite” Xbox 360 has a 250Gb hard drive amongst other minor differences. I’m surprised you have not heard of it. It is your kind of console; one that offers value for money but still gives you something to complain about
Enjoy your PS2 though… almost 9 years on sale in Europe. That is something to celebrate. What are you playing at present? I keep going back to “Urban Reign” when I’m missing the in-fighting here at Three Speech.
I won’t be going, but have a happy EuroGamer Show.

Or something else?
(I believe there is something called “Modern Warfare 2” out soon… anybody heard of it?)
PS. I was a proud parent again yesterday evening. I warmed the egg, waiting for it to crack, knocked it from side to side, played Whac-A-Mole with the occupant, and then out popped my augmented reality now known as “MeyePet”.
Anybody else been blessed with the patter of little paws?

@ fanpages:
I was referring to some of the PS3 (delayed) launch bundles - although I still think the stripped down £425 was an astronomical price tag for a console! Even by today’s standards, it’s still THE MOST expensive console launch price EVER.
Despite the X360’s bad initial design and mediocre MTBF figures, at least Microsoft was not willingly screwing customers with a massive repair bill, as Sony seem to do per standard.
Something that recently earned them further notoriety from a certain consumer complaints television programme. That so-called hardware reliability halo has been fading faaaast…!
PS2 games, I’m trying to get hold of Fahrenheit, because I read that it was a really good interactive, emotive kind of game that caused different feelings and not just reactions.
I’m enjoying a bit of Black, Shox (very underrated) and Ace Combat: Squadron Leader on my PS2. Also Tekken: Dark Resurrection on my PSPslim.
Tickets for EuroGamer London are sold out - some on the door but no guarantee, so probably won’t bother going. I think there’s another show later in the year…?

I haven’t yet deleted threespeech from my subscribed RSS feeds, becaused I kept it as a sort of TODO; a reminder that I should remember to read @136. I didn’t have the time the day it was posted, and .. I just read it now =)
@136: Great reading, Apnomis!
I also just realised that this page isn’t entirely dead. How wonderful! I have some catching up to do

actually I didn’t buy one at launch, got mine for £300 when the 40GB version came out. Not saying I’d pay silly money for anything, let alone a games console, but for me the preceived value of a ps3 (Blu-ray, console exclusives I enjoy, controller preference, mates having the same system, plenty of positive previous with Sony products) meant that the price difference between a ps3 and xbox didn’t concern me too much.
I understand that some people feel the ps3 wasn’t great value when it was launched (and there are still a few ‘problems’ outstanding for some) but for people with disposable income (I’m not talking playboys and millionaires here, just normal folk) price is less of a concern than for say, parents buying a system for their child or a young lad saving up his xmas/birthday/pocket money.
Also, “a wanton desire to impart with your money because you believe that you have no choice”. That’s just it - people are free to choose when, if ever, they buy a PS3 (and you should know) - and they should be able to do it without being made to feel like they are some rabid Sony fanboi who has no choice but to pay £xxx for the privilege. Do you really think that most people who buy/bought PS3s at launch feel they had no choice?
Comment by mrsatansdojo — Nov 2, 2009 @ 11:58 am
@ mrsatansdojo:
Well, if those people wanted the latest Sony console, then of course they had no choice. If they were loyal fans and didn’t want to cross over to the MS camp, of course they didn’t. If they pinned their hopes on BC being a permanent feature, so they could continue playing their PS2 games, of course they had no choice. But plenty of others did and that’s why Sony is where it is today and quite deservedly, too. There’s just absolutely no denying that the biggest elephant in the room during the launch period (and there were quite a few), was the price tag.
I decided I didn’t want to pay that ransom and to be honest my spirit was ‘broken’ when they promised a world-wide launch and then predictably, crapped all over their favourite-to-crap-over territory, ie. UK and Euroland. That was the final insult for me.
And guess what? I was oh so justified because not just of the horrors of the delayed launch and price, but the SixAxis outright lies, the indecision with the models and spec, the fiasco that was BC and the sheer stubbornness of Sony to push the HD era down people’s throats with the BR drive (starting another formats war, while they’re at it), when people were quite happy with DVDs; at least I didn’t see any riots in the streets!
And stop thinking that I’m referring to you personally - if you saved on your PS3 purchase, I can’t really say that I blame you. It only tells me that you (like many others) agree with my point of view that the £425 price was too high and any deals going would be considered a saving.
My point of view and opinion is purely about Sony. I’m bitter that they have ruined my looking forward to enjoying a third generation of the PlayStation brand, because unlike others, I refused to blindly just go and get the new toy (months later than was promised) with its exuberant price tag.

Personally i’m just happy I could get my original 60GB PS3 back up and rnning afterits near fatal YLOD moment!
If there is any reason wit which to not move onto the newer cheaper versions of the console its the memory card readers, extra usb ports, semi-backwards compatibility and most importantly - abilityto install OTHER OS!
It’s been such a brilliant little server for me (saves having to have a seperate box) that i’m completely content with the original release price of £400+.
I’m not rich by any means but I do own all 3 main consoles, and aside from the odd neglect towards the Wii both my xbox and ps3 get a pretty equal 50/50 share workout.
@Zed Zee
I must admit though, I did get swept up in the PS3 lanch hype and it was a very large deciding factor in getting the console when I did.
Saying that tough, if i ha known that XXXXX features would be cut out of the machine i’de have likely coughed up the extra money just so I knew i had the most complete model.
Comment by JohnSketch — Nov 5, 2009 @ 11:46 am
@ JohnSketch:
Wouldn’t it be better to go for a Linux-based PC instead, as your home server?
Plenty of Linux-based NAS boxes these days offer ftp and UPnP type of protocols that all consoles should be able to make use of, at least UPnP.
Otherwise, I’d got for building one up myself from scratch and not put the pressure on a console, rather use that to stream whatever it is I want to stream. Just my thought.
Now, wouldn’t it be great if Sony and Mircrosoft allowed console owners to use extended storage (provided by such units as NAS boxes) for storing all manner of stuff, including game saves, PSN games and even allowing a game to install from its BRD to the NAS drive, via a drive share?
That way, console users would never have to worry about their console HDD running out and also console vendors don’t have to price-in the cost of a new model that has a higher capacity HDD in it.
I’m sure it can be done. They can even create their own partition if, necessary, to accommodate any proprietary filing system they may be using on the console HDD. Wouldn’t that be fab?

I’ve got plenty of linux machines on-hand, but its the convenience factor that steals it for me.
All 3 major consoles are hooked up to my various montor/TV displays in the living room - each with perfectly designated ports - its just practical rather than having to pop cables in and out all the time.
And enabling external storage options for the PS3 would be a definite godsend for media-types.

Comment by E-ROLE — Nov 14, 2009 @ 3:09 pm
@ JohnSketch:
I still don’t get your set-up at home. Do you use the PS3 to boot up YDL on it and then use it as a media server?
If not, then surely you’re limited by the amount of HDD space, even if you have installed a bigger drive.
PS3 is not exactly flexible, as say a PC running Linux on it, is it?
I would’ve thought a NAS box or a PC, acting as a NAS box, with Linux and a shed load of HDD space would be the best bet.
Then, connect this box to your home’s wireless router. It will then have its own IP address and can be browsed or mapped as a share or using UPnP, all consoles should be able to stream your photos and music from it.
On the subject of network drives - yes, that would be a fantastic feature for all three consoles to have and perhaps owners should start demanding it from the vendors - just like the in-game XMB a while back for the PS3.
Comment by Zed Zee — Nov 17, 2009 @ 12:15 pm
@Zed Zee
PS3 “had” YDL ten migrated to plain ol’ Ubuntu, depending what its being used for (and if I’m in the mood to fiddle) it can stay as a linux media centre machine or just purely stream off the tversity setup using the standard XMB playstation DLNA niceties.
Also out of curiousity…bit of a strange question - but what are you doing nowadays “forum-wise”?
Comment by JohnSketch — Dec 18, 2009 @ 12:31 am
@ JohnSketch:
Eurogamer has always been my primary comments site - had a really interesting debate with someone there recently…went on for ages! I like it, because after ThreeSpeech, it’s the only one I know whereby you could debate all topics quite decently and the people on there are just as passionate and it’s not just about Sony - it’s about everything that’s happening in the industry.
Do dabble in the odd comment on the Official Euro PlayStation.Blog (recent one was when I slagged off “Gravity Crash” as being an Acornsoft “Thrust” rip-off), but that site is a bit like a Blockbusters review: Everything is rosy and all releases are good, no matter what!
The Unofficial Threespeech has been somewhat disappointing, as it seems to be in danger of disappearing up it’s own backside, due to moderators choosing to indulge their reporting quirks, rather than sticking to anything worth really commenting on or debating; it’s a bit like “nerdy gamer mods the PS3 guts into a cigarette lighter” kind of news and after a while, the novelty wears off…
I was seriously thinking of creating a bi-annual event, whereby gamers, punters and some of the people I’ve debated with, would all gather (over a pint or two) and thrash out some of the recent games news items, in a live debate…It’s still in its embryonic stages and to be honest, I already do this with some friends anyway, albeit not always face-to-face.
How about you?

You’ve made my point precisely. The 3DO was too damn expensive for its time and the PS3 was too damn expensive recently when it was launched, too. Both units have suffered for the arrogance and contempt displayed by their manufacturers, towards their loyal fan base.
