RESPONSE TO LAUNCH DELAY RUMOUR

A few websites have reported that the PS3 launch in Europe is to be delayed past March. Sony have contacted us to say this is “categorically not true.”

A brief statement from David Reeves (President and CEO of SCEE) reads as follows: “We’re still on schedule to launch PS3 in March throughout the PAL territories and all speculation otherwise is without foundation.”

  1. Good call Sony on putting the rumors to rest early.

  2. I think he is lying. I’m not convinced. The whole PS3 launch has been a shambles compares to the other next gen consoles.

  3. Sony have said recently production issues have been “resolved” and in the London Q&A it was revealed developers are on a Q1 March target. Which ties in with play.coms 7th March release date…

  5. I think if they really want to put a lot of these rumors to rest they need to at least come up with some sort of number date as to when they would LIKE to launch.

March 7? Sounds good to me. Sony, just go ahead and say March 7(even if it gets changed) so that a lot of these people will quit ASSuming things. Either way it seems like there will be a good deal of PAL units allocated by that time IF they have even been making PAL units.

  6. I sincerely hope it’s not true - if it is, I don’t think people will hold out. Could prove a massive problem for Sony. Really really hope they don’t make that mistake.

I agree that they really do need to set a date now.

  7. er…i hope this is a good response (from sony) via ones previous post…serious…the flak sony would get in europe would be unbelievable, if thet let us (everyone) down from making a false promise (again) to launch on time….
i wouldnt bloody mind…but im sodding dying to get one (and refused an import) :(

  8. I really really hope that Sony do launch in March. But when they were going to Launch in Novemeber, the denied all the reports coming out of Japan about the delay unitl the fateful day……

Give us a date Sony…..I can get my desposit down then. it’s sat here burning a hole in my pocket…..

  9. I really don’t think the Europeans will stomach it, esp as the ‘other’ console maker has gone to great lengths to accomodate everyone in Europe.

I think (and hope) Sony knows how bad further delays could be, and will do everything they can to make sure the PS3 does launch in March. Not April, not September, but March.

360 games will be at 2nd and 3rd gen by then, plus it will more than likely be dropped in price. I can’t help but feel further European delays will result in commercial suicide.

Apart from the commercial viewpoint, it’s just not fair on us Europeans. So please Sony, don’t let us down! We have faith in you, but it’s only so far it can stretch.

  10. Sony, why don’t we get an EXACT Date for the release

    March has 31 days

    1 site says 7 march 07
    the other says nothing and
sony still dushes off the dust for the delayed release of the biggest videogamesmarket (PAL) (not only EU)

with only 2.5 months to go it’s 1-3-07

i as an investor of 17k Euro on PS1,PS2 hardware/games demands an official anwser of the exact release date

    Comment by Darkness — December 13, 2006 @ 8:49 pm

  11. I won’t believe it until I see an official answer that it is indeed March.

Theres a lot of money waiting to be spent on gaming from us PAL folk Sony, and to no obligation from us whatsoever, we wait while you spoil ‘em greedy yanks.

Another delay and you may as well change the region name into ‘PAL360′.

  13. its good to hear but its about time they had given us a firm date and price.

and release a proper official ps3 site since the current one is just rubbish tbh.

  14. Why are all the posts here anonymous? If the authors gave their actual names and said who they are and who they work for, it would go a long way toward restoring some of Sony’s credibility - especially in the wake of their recent disastrous fake PSP blog.

  15. Also, I just noticed that this domain is registered to a UK marketing firm (www.rampindustry.com). So this isn’t really a blog, then - it’s yet another advertisement in disguise.

  17. I’d wait and see. They were saying the same thing when rumors went out about Sony coming up short for the US/Japan launch- look how many they ended up shipping. Sony needs work hard and deliver the systems, firmware updates, and quality games to earn their reputation back and consumer trust.

  18. Tom S- Everyone knew that a couple months ago. Someone discovered the same thing you did and yes, it’s run by Sony. Seems like the same type of idea as Major Nelson.

  19. I’ve given up hope. I am going to buy an xbox 360.

  20. They’re not going to launch in Europe while they are still desperately trying to stock Japan and North America. They also aren’t going to launch until they take care of the problems they are having with scaling,etc..

Unless these problems are solved to Sony’s satisfaction by mid February there isn’t likely to be a European launch in March, period.

    Comment by Cornelious Schlimer — December 14, 2006 @ 1:40 pm

  21. I don’t really think the Major Nelson comparison holds up, though. I mean, he’s Larry Hryb, a Microsoft employee. Who are these guys? Anonymous marketing guys from an outside company?

This is why Sony is struggling with an image problem now. Microsoft, for all their faults, is good about interacting with the community. They’re open and out there. Sony hires advertisers to set up fake blogs and create the impression of interaction, like we’re too stupid to notice. Not that I think they really CARE if we notice. But still.

  22. Has anyone put any thought into the idea that maybe the US/Japan production is trickling in because they are….*GASP* producing PAL units????

If they have been producing 10% of all PS3’s for PAL and stocking them up on the side, that would mean that they have at least 50,000 units ready to go, and that’s only if they limited themselves to 10%.

    20% - 100,000
    30% - 150,000
    etc.

  23. 22- Honestly, it seems like Sony is getting the units out pretty well, at least as well as can be expected. Locally I know one of my friend’s brothers was able to find a bunch of PS3’s at Wal-Mart, so he bought 4 of the 20 gb ones to sell on Ebay. Obviously it’s a free country and he can do what he wants, but I think it’s just taking advantage of gamers that are actually trying to find a system, but are unable to unless they want to pay over the normal price in order to obtain one.

Mine is being delivered today that I ordered from Gamestop, but it definitely seems like more are being in stock. Gamestop has pre-orders now for consoles shipping on 1/5/07 (I ordered mine about a week ago and it was scheduled to ship tomorrow but shipped two days early). I know Sears has or had them in stock today. Seems like Wal-Mart and some of the other stores are having them pop-up on line pretty often. So it seems like Sony is getting the units out pretty regularly.

All that was to say that I think you’re right, it doesn’t seem out of the question for me to think that they can launch with at least 200k units in Europe, if not at least double that. That’s 4 months from launch in the US, and I think it’s easily do-able to launch on time, unless there’s something crazy that happens.

  24. I do agree that (threespeech) need to be a bit more open about who they are. Are they connected to any other game sites? Are they run by Sony? What is ’semi-official’?

I’d love to share some of my plans with Three Speech, but cannot do so until I know who’s behind it.

    Comment by Timeless — December 15, 2006 @ 4:08 pm

  25. As a stock holder you can get all Sony’s financial reports. Holdings shares in SCEE surely you should be able to find out whether there will be a delay in the European launch because you need this info as it can effect you, as you are a share holder in SCEE. I could be totally wrong about this but if there is any person or knows of any persons, could you find out this info from SOny.

I think Sony still could luanch in the UK only if they delayed European launch as we buy more playstation than any other European country anyway. If there is to be a delay, I’m imoprting. They may of stopped Lik-Sang but there are others and I could always buy my games/blu-rays movies from US ebay.
