UPDATES
There’s a couple seemingly in the works and they’re both worth waiting for. There’s the MotorStorm update coming on June 7, which includes the following according to IGN
- New Time Attack game mode
- Fix for 5.1 and 7.1 audio
- Corrections to a ranking system
- Correction to the boost mode in multiplayer
- Autostart with a fixed countdown time in multiplayer lobby
And many other improvements. Click here to find out more.
Also, the firmware 2.00 update is allegedly coming soon. There is unsurprisingly no detail or even confirmation available at this time, but as we like speculation as much as the next man, why not tell us what improvements you’d like to see to the firmware?
There’s already been something of an update to how the Playstation Network is going to develop in the future, as SCEA’s Michael Shorrock speaks to an audience of developers and gives out plenty of hints as to where PSN is going next. There’s nothing concrete as to where, when and how yet, but there’s plenty of hints as to how developers can incorporate Home into games by having their own virtual ‘pavilions’ within the space. Obviously this is all broad brush stuff that we probably won’t see anything of for the next six to 12 months at least, but looks like the kind of thing that could make Home stand out from the crowd. Read the whole piece from Gamasutra here

Hmm.. Wasn’t the 2.00 speculation already debunked? You might regret reopening that can of maggots :p
I’d like to see streaming from a PC/PS3 and more codec support… turn the PS3 into the media machine it’s been pushed as previously.
Comment by Tony — May 15, 2007 @ 8:07 pm
Yeah, the 2.00 update looks like it was a (successful) mole-trap!
I’d like for Sony to swallow their pride and get Apple to port iTunes into the XMB.
Comment by technome — May 15, 2007 @ 8:22 pm
The Halo 3 public beta starts soon. This seems like a perfect time for Sony to release something big, I doubt a Killzone 2 beta is upcoming but a big PS3 update would help.
This 2.00 PS3 firmware rumor had everyone talking. Either way it was positive for Sony, who has seen more bad than good news lately.
Comment by Louis — May 15, 2007 @ 8:22 pm
I think they should make the PSN a seperate XMB - It would make it so much more Game 3.0ish
Comment by DPR — May 15, 2007 @ 8:25 pm
And be able to view messages ingame
Comment by DPR — May 15, 2007 @ 8:26 pm
I could go on and on.
When you sign on, have it update a local database of store content, thus allowing it to be integrated into the XMB with no lag. Also letting us use the Square button to view by different categories
Upscaling of PS1/PS2/DVD content. It should be as easy as stretching the framebuffer over a large polygon.
When the screensaver comes on, the PS3 should shut off the controllers.
Add the option to auto shut off when the downloads are complete.
Add the option to reboot into OtherOS when you press the PS button
Show the time/date on that menu too
Custom wallpaper/theme like PSP.
RSS channel like PSP
Let us use any image for our avatar
Let us turn the PS3 into a wifi hotspot for PSPs while in the XMB
More codecs!
Support media streaming over SAMBA/UPnP
Let us rip PS1 discs to PSP
Let us play DVDs/BRDs over Remote Play. Come on, we can rip the discs in linux if we wanted to pirate them, how could we pirate them over wifi?
Remove the need to press the home button when you play a PS1/PS2 game
The ability to act as a webserver for PSP to up/download videos/photos/music over the net
Remote play enabled in more games, especially downloadable ones
Convert movies to PSP like PSX has
Standbye/sleep mode, and charge controllers while in this mode
Enable motion sensing to be used for the mouse in the store. OR at least use the analog as analog, and not digital.
Enable copy/delete multiple, subfolders and sorting/grouping for movies and PS1/PS2 memory cards
And of course, Custom soundtracks and in-game/cross-game chat.
Comment by Techni — May 15, 2007 @ 8:33 pm
Enable PS1 games over remote play.
Let us record audio messages to offline users. If you don’t want to host the files on a server, leave them on our hard drives, and when our PS3 detects that user online next have it send it then.
Let us save web pages, PSP can. Add another option under network that enumerates all saved web pages. And save all images/audio/flash/etc content as well.
What happened to those photo editing features that were shown off before PS3 came out?
If Linux doesn’t have access to 64 MB of RAM cause it goes to the SystemOS, you should let us call up the PS button menu and add Reboot to SystemOS in place of Reboot to OtherOS suggested other. (That’s if I’m right about the RAM usage)
This one is more server side, but how about RSS feeding our gaming habits? I personally don’t like the loss of privacy but I know a lot of people are obsessed with showing off their recently played games/events. Maybe enable games to report where the player is specifically in the game, and provide a pic for certain areas.
I have a Pocketstation, so I can’t use PS3 for FF8 since I need the ability to save to it. And you guys have a custom icon when the Pocketstation is in the memory card adapter. How about a Pocketstation emulator? You’d have to hack the PS1 IO system emulator to detect it. Or release Pocketstation games for a buck each? Have them use PS1 savegames too.

Maybe this already been fixed? Upscaling to 720p when playing DVDs?
Comment by Mr Bergman — May 15, 2007 @ 8:45 pm
the complete list of change in the 2.00 firmware is already public on the Playstation official forum, and was given by Leah, who worked on the 1.60 and 1.70 firmwares.
Comment by Jenny — May 15, 2007 @ 8:50 pm
I dislike how PS3 uses PSP for PS1 savedata.
Either let us use PSP as a memory card, rather than having to copy save games to and from it each time we play.
Or have a synch savedata option, where the saves are automatically sent to/copied from the PSP, depending on which was written to last. (Unless both were written to after the last synch, then it asks which we want to keep) Maybe let it sync RSS feeds and webpages to the PSP too. Automatically add them to the favorites and channel listing
We can copy PS1 games to the PSP, how about letting us copy them to memory sticks inserted directly into the PS3?
How about adding all those screen options for PS1 games to PS3 that are in PSP?
(PSP can upscale PS1 games, why doesn’t PS3?)
Comment by Techni — May 15, 2007 @ 8:55 pm
Hmmmm well there a lot of things I still like to see in a fw update. Sony has got to integrate the Playstation Network a lot better with the ability to send game invites and since there is no universal friendslist, the ability to sync friendslists of games such as Resistance with your XMB one (or why not have a universal one - its never too late).
Another thing is a more detailed gamerprofile in the form of a webpage: you should be able to customize it, put videos and pictures on it and it should be accessible for everyone to see. A lot of these things will be available in Home in a much more interactive way but not everyone is probably planning to download it and its always nice to see how your friends are without having to go through a lengthy process.
Furthermore, the Store needs to be updated (content- as well as layoutwise): Trying to find that one piece of content is a horrible experience and it takes ages to start up compared to the Xbox Marketplace. I also suggest that they give us like a preview of what new stuff is in the store without having to go on it. e.g. when you select it (without clicking on it), the background should change showing all the featured items (just like it happens when you select a game but more in depth).
And if they could add all the features that were in that supposedly leaked features list of Firmware 2.0 (such as ingame XMB), then the PS3 would be heaven

I don’t like the way Sony are not commenting on the ‘rumour’.
They are deleting all related threads from the EU community forums. At least in the US they are keeping all discussion in one thread, but when something is so widely reported, what good does it do stopping discussion of it on the EU forums? I don’t get it.
They should just come out and say it was a leak and the update is out on day X. Their behavior is negative when this should be something positive for PS3, the update looks great.
I don’t think anyone can claim that it’s a fake, when Sony themselves are not actually saying it is fake and when the update contains the text:
Zero Unused Disk Space has been added as an option under System Settings > Format Utility..
You couldn’t make that up if you tried.

The PS Store takes 1 second to start up, so does Live’s. And it does give you a little preview for items you select. Thats what the whole top half of the screen is.
The store is getting content, give it time. Live’s store didn’t start full

Sorry, offtopic. Ahem.
I’d like to see Remote Play available from outside the home, á la Location Free.
It is one of the features I bought a PS3 for and yet there is still no word on when it’ll be implemented.
Also, Audio playlists are essential for making the PS3 a true media center.
The method of browsing tracks could also be improved. It’s a bit slow with 30Gbs of music, and it needs to scroll through them more like an iPod clickwheel, with increased acceleration as you scroll.

Comment by shinblade — May 15, 2007 @ 10:55 pm
These are the firmware updates that I think the vast majority of PS3 owners would like to see.
ESSENTIAL UPDATES:
1.) Blu Ray Playback @ 720p - Not many people have 1080p TV’s but loads have 720p!
2.) DIV/X Support, H.264 is already supported, so supporting DIV X would allow many of us who use the PS3 as a media centre to view our videos too. Microsoft has just added this on the 360, come on Sony this will really help sell the PS3!
3.) Support for Playlists in the Music Area, things like M3U files that win amp supports. Additionally there is no way to edit an MP3’s data if it’s on a USB HDD?
4.) XMB in game so you can invite people to games easily.
5.) Folders within the photo/video/music section so we don’t have to order files by date or song title etc. Some kind of method that allows the user to put all of X songs into a folder.
6.) Music in games, much like the 360, the ability to have your own music on in a game.
7.) Streaming for Music/Video/Photo’s from a home PC over a home network, be that with a piece of Sony software on the PC or whatever.
I’ll leave it at that, as I think those are pretty much the most important aspects of making the PS3 the centre of home entertainment. Wallpaper and themes add very little value to the machine, whereas the above functionality would make the PS3 an absolute winner.
Comment by Paul — May 15, 2007 @ 10:55 pm
I am so angry about this seemly minor feature not being present….
Yes, I am talking about being about to create, view, or listen to video or mp3 playlists. What is so hard about that I don’t know. But it’s been two years since the XMB made it’s way into gaming and we still don’t have a version that supports custom playlists.
I also want the Playstation Store to be incorporated as a program into the XMB itself, rather than a simple webpage. When I say make it a program I mean similiar to how the photoslide show is a program.

I want the PS3 to create Eboots for the PSP of PS1 games. I already own half the stuff in the PS store why should I have to pay for it again even if it’s 5 bucks. Let the System check the copy protection to confirm over the network that it’s a real PS1 game and not a bootleg them create the downloadable version of itthat you can upload to the PSP. I mean seriously Hackers have gotten dozens of much loved PS1 games running already on the thing And this would force many developers to stop relying on 10year old ports for the PSP without any new content and maybe force them to concider new games since they’d face a possible non sale. Concider the fact that I have a non Moded PSP and I can go to my friend and say “Hey look I got Syphon filter!” then he pulls his out and says “I got FF7 FF8 FF9 and FFtactics all with full support and I didnt have to pay for them because I already had the disks at home” This type of thing seriously looks bad and needs correcting FAST.

PLEASE FORCE DEVS TO UTILIZE THE PSN FRINEDS LIST WRATHER THAN MAKE THEIR OWN. ALSO DECRESE THE OS MEMORY FOOT PRINT. UPWARDS OF 100 MG OF MEMORY JUST FOR THE OS (20 FOR TEH FRIGGEN FRIENDS LIST) IS REDICULOUS WHEN TEH 360′S OS DOES MOST OF TEH STUF PEOPLE WANT ALL IN 32 MB

Some more Psp/Ps3 Connectivity.
Maybe I want to hook up my Psp to my ps3 and play it on my HDTV. That’d be swell don’t you think?
The Friends List.
I like the simplistic nature but improve on it. I know you can hold up to only 50 friends but I wouldn’t mind options to turn off the avatar and just stick to names. Think GoogleTalk. It isn’t a memory hog and does it’s job well.
The PSN Store
Not a fan of the colours. Actually scratch that. the Icons bug me. Some have different colour controllers to depict certain genre. I’m like “Wth” but I can live with it for now.
Anyways. I guess for me, Text Over everything Graphic in this sense is superior seeing as it’s loading from a server or wherever. so to cut back on loading time, that’d be great if they revamp the store.
The Internet Browser.
Is NOT that great. Compared to the Wii, which is Opera Based, streams flash quite well. Wasn’t the browser for the ps3 built by SCE? anyways, the ram limit needs to be raised higher. Fix the pages that doesn’t work because of the issues from the browser (Update the Flash player? yeah.)
More organization from the XMB
The XMB Is great. but after awhile it gets loaded with content. My Video Section is filled up and it takes awhile to scroll up and down. Able to create folders on the spot would be nice.
Ps1/DVD.
Not really upscaling. Just making sure the list of games get fixed and not become low priority.
That’s about it for me.
Oh forgot.
Need an OFFICIAL Ps2 to ps3 Controller adaptor.
I’m stuck without playing DDR and Guitar Hero II because of that.

Increased HDD support for games to speed up load times.
Increased HDD support for XMB functions to free up more system memory to speed up load times, frame rates et al. (24mb for the friends lists???)
720p Blu-Ray play-back (My Sony has a design fault where 1080i periodically causes the screen goes blank - grrr).

Add everything from the supposed leaked Firmware 2.0 list, add in the various up/downscaling requests from folks (PS1/PS2/DVD upscaling, BR->720p downscaling), add nested folders in the XMB, add network folders… and since this is a wish list, why not add XviD codec support? And oh, while you’re at it, give the Linux guys direct access to the RSX… that would leave “lack of great games” as my remaining complaint and it looks like that’s already being worked on…
Comment by rothbart — May 16, 2007 @ 8:09 am
Look, what I want from 2.0 is very simple. I want SONY to put their money where their mouth is and make the PS3 into a true Media Hub. First of all do away with all the nasty restrictions on video playback. I cant playback TS mpeg2 files? Only 2 channel output from a AC3 multichannel video? What the hell?!?
Free video players for the PC and Linux can do a thousand times better than that. They can playback virtually any video format and the PS3 can only play the videos that you give us via the PSN? That basically means that the PS3 is NOT a media hub.
Also HD video playback is useless without a way to bring videos of over 4GB in size to the PS3. Either start reading other disk formats than the obsolete POS fat32 or at least give us the ability to watch videos over a local network.
And what it is with files having to have the exact specific extension before the PS3 can recognize it. Be a little more flexible with the extensions or do what PCs do and read the file to see what it contains.
Comment by Kamiboy — May 16, 2007 @ 9:47 am
More wishes that will never come true:
Being able to read content from an iPod correctly would be VERY nice. Or maybe even just one of your own mp3 players. What is all that SONY becoming a global company good for if such things don’t start to happen?
I am sorry SONY, but the PSN needs a huge and complete overhaul. A sluggish, badly designed webpage just does not cut it. How about doing something like that insanely great looking singstar interface you’ve been demoing? Now that is design worthy of the PSN.
Last but in no way least:
Dear SONY, I am a programmer by trait and I know much about incompetent programmers and projects leads and how dangerous they are to any project. Looking over the memory footprint for the PS3 for the latest Firmware is like a slap to the face.
I must say I am rather disgusted by the bloat and inefficiency by which these so called parts of the PS3 OS have been designed. I have always loathed M$ as being the king of writing inefficient and bloated software but your programmers take that incompetence to the nth degree.
For the love of god immediately look to hiring the most talented programmers you can get your hands on and have them redesign and rewrite every line of code.
Get your hands on people used to work on limited devices or real-time systems. Hell, recruit some code crunchers from the demo scene, do something. As it looks now the PS3s OS is a horrible train wreck of bad design ideas and badly implemented code full of redundancies and bloat.
No wonder all multiplatform games look vastly inferior on the PS3 when utilising even the simplest services takes away hundreds of megabytes from the already rather scarce memory available to them.
With the PS3 being about a year delayed I had expected the added time to benefit the design of the OS.
Once your army of newly recruited competent army have gone over the code of the OS and reduced the memory footprint to a fraction of what it is today make things like support for friend lists, trophies, in game invites, voice chat MANDATORY requirements for every PS3 game.
Don’t give developers the easy way out, it just leads to lazy inferior ports and more reasons to by the version for the competing platform.

One of the things that needs a change is the PSN Store. I’m not just talking content, but overall layout and speed.
What I would like to see is a PSN Store that has the XMB interface. You just click the Store button, and the background changes color, your icons changes and could play a intro tune. (Key media and information could be stored on the hdd to quicken loading.) There could be a News icon, Video icon, Games icon etc. Each of these would have content sorted in groups, similar to the way Music is sorted currently in XMB (date, genre, size prize). Each item would have a small preview icon, and when you select it, it would open a window displaying more information, additional pictures (video thumbnails?), and download options etc.
That would be great.

I really hope threespeech takes this list and shows it to Sony. It makes no sense for so many LOYAL Sony Fans to see the potential in the PS3 and not see it to use. I’m tired of hearing “it takes time” I love Sony but I”m a gamer first and the 360 is doing the right things at the right times. We ALL can agree on how easy, fun and multi tasking friendly live and marketplace is. Be HONEST EVERYONE!!! LOL. If MS can put out a download for your ipod to show the folders the right way, so can Sony. The summer is yours for the taking SONY!!!!! Don’t screw this up!!!! Halo 3 is coming……….you can say what you want but it’s coming….it’s like the cult Star Wars but for the video genre…

Something interesting regarding 2.0-
http://x5.psp3d.com/melaughs.txt
Seems fairly true, but the PS3 forums seems to be covering it up. Never seen the mods so active.

too late- it’s down already. Here’s what it said-
PS3 2.00 update by me (Leah) is fake. Fake, fake, fake.
I was bored one afternoon and setup a fake features list to have some fun.
The Internet bought my joke and now I am famous as an inside source (LOL) for the update.
All around the world people are anticipating a 2.00 PS3 firmware update with my BS features.
Shows just how gullable the world really is.
Please don’t hate me. K thx. Bai.

After thinking about it a little I suddenly realised that the PSN can never change. The reason has to do with SONY’s strategy with the PS3 OS features. Adding a (rather crappy) browser to the PS3 OS was made with the plan to use it not just for the PSN, but also for developers to use when they want customized PSN access from within their games.
All they have to do is start the browser software module and point it to the adress of their shop and everything works out. SONY’s approach of lets just give the developers the freedom to do whatever they want is a near catastrphic one in my opinion.
Game developers (in par due to the publishers that have them in their chains) should be treated like the retarded hamsters that they mostly are. Specially the western developers shy away from any sort of challenge, and why shouldn’t they? They are given almost no money and less time time to get things done.
If they see the oppotunity to slack off they will make full use of it. SONY, for the love of god, please get the message. Giving the developers the freedom to do whatever they want is not the way forward. Give them specific and well defined goals to live up to and the tools to help them do it as fast as possible.
m$ knows how retarded developers are, just look at how crappy and bloated windows is. They know that they have to hold the developers hands and guide them through the whole process and make sure they do everything right. Developers need to be forced to implement and develop certain features into every PS3 in order to have them released on the PS3.
Everyone prefers the that others consoles version of games because those games have a long list of requirements that they need to implement before being released, so gamers are guaranteed to have them on every game on that platform.
How hard can it be to force developers to implement the same features set on the PS3?
Not all developers are as skilled and dedicated as your own first and second party developers. Most of them are lazy unambitious bastards that wanna get things done with as little resistance and challenge as possible. They are just in it to make money and they have no prestige.
Don’t let them get away with it! How can you expect the much more expensive PS3 to outsell that other console when its game actually offer less to its gamers.

I just want to see dvd/ps1/ps2 upscale into HD… That’s the only update I’d actually need at this point. From the leaked list of stuff for 2.0, I simply wouldn’t use any of it… What a waste.

“There are a lot of people with 480p/1080p only TV’s. ”
No, there are very few. That’s why it has not been addressed.
Oh, and to those of you complaining about the OS memory footprint, realize it’s fake. PS3s OS uses 52 megs of ram, yes that’s true.
But the video ram spec is not true. The site that first reported it took it from a message board, which said it was an estimate using double buffering on dual 1080p. Now since PS3 doesn’t have dual monitor support divide in half already. And that video RAM was reserved for the framebuffer. Not the OS.
And 360’s 32MB of RAM for it’s OS, doesn’t include it’s framebuffer.
So it’s an apple to estimated orange comparison.
To help put it in perspective, PSPs OS uses 5 MB of ram.

Techni- Don’t know where you’ve been, but there are a lot of 1080i only owners (at least in the US). 1080i only CRTs were very popular, looked great, and were very inexpensive just a few years back. Up until the release of the PS3, there was never a reason to care about their lack of 720p support since EVERY OTHER HD DEVICE IN THE F-ing UNIVERSE scales. So, in short, stfu.
Comment by 1080guy — May 18, 2007 @ 4:27 pm
I think that giving ps3 users some options on scaling should not be so hard? No matter if it is 720p, 1080i/p, it can be done, right sony?
Comment by Ollie — May 20, 2007 @ 8:07 pm
As said many times, proper scaling for games as well as my blu-ray movies from 1080P on down should be added.
