Loaded magazine’s games expert Chris Burke gives his take on Sony’s Leipzig announcements.
Good news at last for any PS3 owners who may be beginning to wonder whether their shiny black console was going to live up to the bright future promised for it. As you will know by now, Sony have unveiled their latest plans for the PS3 and PSP at the Leipzig Games Convention in Germany today, and the upshot is some pretty damn cool stuff.
Sony’s pledge (and indeed justification for the higher price tag) back in March that the PS3 would be a total home entertainment hub – for games, films, music and TV – is now that bit nearer to being a reality. It’s a hugely exciting prospect: anyone who’s got Sky+ already will tell you that it’s changed their lives, so being able to use your PS3 for recording and pausing live HD telly is a huge bonus for the PS3 owner, taking the console into the category of a totally must-have piece of kit at last.
The PSP announcements are also getting us as excited as kids on Christmas Day too. Not only will you now be able to watch your recorded programmes on the go remotely, but you can use it as a sat-nav and video and voice messenger too, turning the handheld PlayStation into everything you need on-the-go. Then, on top of all that, there’s its properly revolutionary video on demand service with BSkyB, so you can download top content to your PSP too. At the time of writing, no announcements have been made concerning the PSP’s tea-making ability.
The new announcements are certain to have a massive impact on not only the games industry, but also the video industry and the mobile phone industry too – let’s face it, mobile games are never going to be as good as PSP games, so now the PSP can offer Wi-Fi communications and GPS on a smart (and slim-line) bit of kit, why use anything else?
And it’s totally going to change the way we think about and use our games consoles too – not to mention finally making the missus understand why we love our PlayStations so much. After six months of playing catch-up, Sony have done the smart thing and given the PlayStation 3 a vital and sustainable purpose beyond pure gaming. Now when anyone asks the question, ‘What’s the point of getting a PS3 when other consoles are cheaper?’, just tell them to feel the quality and the width.

LOL

That was an unmitigated utter DISASTER. It is clear that SONY are abandoning the hardcore gamer. The entire LIEPZIG SONY “FIREWORKS” was that we are getting PS3 turned into a sky/freeview box. NO NEW GAMES ANNOUNCED just loads of SHOVELWARE GARBAGE aimed at the Wii family non gamer market. GAmes where utterly sidelined with all the BUZZ/GO! Singstar karaoke crap I AM UTTERLY LET DOWN AND DISGUSTED. SONY no longer value real gamers just like nintendo they have set their sight on other markets THIS IS THE DAY THAT HARDCORE GAMING DIED. I dont want freeview or SKY on my games console. No mention of HOME at all I dont want to play crap like BUZZ QUIZ or any of that GO! branded garbage NO FIREWORKS JUST LIES AND THE ABANDONMENT OF THE TRUE GAMER. DEVESTATING

But this service is not out, and Microsoft announced a similar service months ago. How can this be spun as Sony pulling ahead and adding more value to the PS3 when there’s still nothing new that the competition can’t do.
This presentation was a total flop for people interested in playing games. Nothing that we hadn’t already known about was released, and everything we had hoped to be announced (new controller, home open beta, etc) was totally ignored.
E3 was ten times better than this Lepzig conference, David Reeves built up hype only to completely disappoint.
Comment by Travis — Aug 22, 2007 @ 6:49 pm
While the Freeview HDTV PVR release with PSP remote features was truly groundbreaking stuff, it is disappointing how that and most of the new features for PSP (video download, messenger) were UK-only stuff. So, not much for rest of the europe, yet.

The future won’t even come close to belonging to SONY and the PS3 if they don’t do three major things:
1) give us lots of games SOON
2) market the PS3 better-less than half the people that own it even know that it plays Blu-Ray movies!
3) educate as they innovate-not every who plays videogames reads gaming blogs and websites in their free time

GAMING….”this is dying” and being sent to Sony Lfestyle Hell. to pay for our crimes with chav karaoke quiz wii style shovelware for all eternity. And you get your PSP turned into a tomtom to find your way there.

What on earth are you guys saying. The ps3 was not advertised as ONLY game console. It is an entertainment system.
These are all much wanted and highly anticipated stuff. There are quite a few good games just on the horizon.

Sorry but my thoughts are that Sony are slowly slipping away from the reason they got into this business all them years ago Games!
No price drop either, xbox360 dropping in price to 249.99 on friday with a heap of games such as bioshock, halo3, pgr4 all due before christmas!!
Why would anyone interested in soley playing games even consider paying 425 for a ps3?? they can add all they want bottom line is as a Games machine its looks terrible against the competition at the moment.

Wow. Seriously guys, chill out.
Anyone would think you ONLY play games in your spare time, and do utterly nothing else.
Games has to be my number 1 thing to do infront of the TV, but I also love movies, and TV, and music… if I can get all those things from some ’superhub’ in my house, I’m more than pleased.
And I’ll be picking up a PSP (slim, of course) to dial in and pick up my media on the go, and with Sat Nav, I won’t get lost doing it!
Sure, game news was slim… it’s not ALWAYS about the games 100%. If Sony made that move, then I doubt we’d ever see a PS4…

I consider myself a hardcore gamer, been gaming since the early 80’s. I am actually happy to see the PS3 get all these bells and whistles to expand upon the features in the PS3. I only wished these things were coming out to North America. I seriously think that in the long term, the PS3 can become THE home media device to have to store and play any and all electronic media.. and the PSP remote connectivity is also forward thinking in that regard. If you see the PS3 as ‘just’ a game machine, then I can see the grief, but like the PS2, not everyone used a PS2 as just a game machine, but as a DVD player. Imagine where the PS3 could be in 5 years with all these media /inteconnectivity features. That’s what Sony wants, not just to repeat their successes in just the games industry.

Too right mate, the comments to this story are nothing short of disturbing to me. The ps3 was and is marketed as an all-round entertainment solution, and with at least 2 or 3 major ’showcasing’ opportunities this year, sony using this one to show off something other than games should be very welcome. I know the games im waiting for, and everyone else knows what the ones they want to hurry up and get released, but some of the stuff announced here is truly exciting is it not? and not one of them is a game. Be happy with the fact that you have bought a machine that will serve more than one major role in your house for a looooong time, dont moan because everything u want isnt out tomorrow. There is outdoors too.
Comment by Photek — Aug 22, 2007 @ 10:49 pm
I kind of agree with the unhappy bunch, in that I bought the PS3 to play games, I have a satnav already & I’m not planning on getting HD just yet purely as I dont watch a lot of TV. I’m glad Sony are taking steps to evolve but they can’t forget the people who put them where they are and I expect many of these people are the ones ho bought the PSone & PS2. Still I’m holding out for tomorrows weekly update heres hoping to be blown away eh!

Guys this is nothing. TGS will be the blow out! It always happens like this. You shouldn’t raise your hope. TGS always unleashes the beast within Sony. Besides E3, Lepzig, and TGS are a month after each other. You seriously were expecting announcments. On top of that, Lepzig isn’t about the US. Those Announcments such as some games, firmware updates and such wouldn’t matter untill TGS anyway. You guys can’t be brought down. After six months the PS3 can only go up. Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up.

The games are comming so just wait.. it isnt all sonys fault.
After all the knocks sony give us… they sure do know how to reel us all back in though.

I don’t think releasing this TV stuff is going to have an impact on what’s going on in the background games-wise. There are plenty of games around the corner. Games further in to the future… I assume they are being worked on and we’ll find out in time! Sony aren’t idiots, despite the bad press they get.
Comment by Obli — Aug 23, 2007 @ 4:16 am
The problem is, all these announcements are for only UK or at least only Europe. The rest of the world is shit out of luck. Then even if they weren’t limited to just Europe, they are still not even coming until next year.
I think people who bought PS3s for Sony’s previous promises are a bit bummed out that we’re still waiting for stuff like Home, Little Big Planet, and Lair (although at this point, Lair is sounding like total crap anyway). Now instead of fulfilling on all the stuff they told us we’d get this Summer, we’re just getting shown more crap that’s far away.
Sony really needs to get it’s act together and start acting like one company instead of having SCEE, SCEA, and SCEJ all acting like they’re competing with each other. First it was David Reeves taking a steaming dump on SCEA’s price cut, and now it’s a bunch of products that nobody will see outside of the UK.
If you’re going to turn the PS3 into the one-stop entertainment device, maybe you should get the entire Sony corporation on board.

I just wanted to point out that there are no HD channels on Freeview at the moment. It sounds like the device will have two DVB-T tuners so will simply upscale SD Freeview to HD. Also, a harddrive upgrade will be required if you want to record more than 40 hours (or so) of TV.
What would be really nice would be if they could automate things so I can easily transfer recorded TV onto a PSP so I can watch it on the train.
It would be difficult for Sony to announce any more games as they seem to have a packed holiday line up already. After that the majority of games will be multi-platform so you can get your game announcements at a Microsoft event too!

The future of gaming…well Nintendo are not going to get passed by anyone (once they pass 360 globally) and i can’t see Sony overhauling MS for ages as they just don’t have the games to compete with Bioshock and co yet..

Its about time EU PS3 owners had something to brag about after all the delays and crap content weve been given. I think these announcments are great. Sony is giving its customers the CHOICE to make there PS3 and PSP more than just a games console. I wont be buying all the products announced but PLAYTV i will. Everybody is different so some things will apeal to people while others wont. Sony is recognizing this fact and giving its console owners the CHOICE. If you dont like these new products dont buy them no one is forcing you!
We had games announcments at E3 and weve had release dates for some big titles announced recently so stop moaning people. PS3 and PSP have a lot of potential and it will apeal to a wider audience.

There where no fireworks for me im afraid ! just a chilling view of a “lifestyle” future full of quiz and karaoke “entertainment shovelware” FOR THE WHOLE HAPPY NUCLEAR FAMILY TO ENJOY!!! The most disturbing thing was the total lack of any new game announcements and the shift of Sony repositioning the PS3 in the wii family-crap shovelware market with added freeview!!!! and gps and social messaging!
AWFUL.

Anyone complaining about games is either a troll or hasn’t got a clue about what is coming out untill the end of the year.
Exclusives this year are Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Lair, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Ratchett & Clank: Future, Haze, Unreal Tournament 3, WipEout HD, Gran Turismo Prologue, Singstar, Socom: Confrontations, The Eye of Judgment and possible even Metal Gear Online.
Then there is still a whole bunch of multiplatform games.
Xbots get a life.

Will people stop bitching about games which are coming anyway, stop reading thing and bitching about it with out looking at other announcements
over 60 BD games in europe are due out before Christmas
And some of them are AAA games from Sony themselves, the 360 has took 2 years to just to get 2 AAA titles so far with Halo obviously being it’s 3rd AAA
This announcement is what ppl wanted, it’s what ppl moaned for
And like usual Sony gives & ppl bitch, here’s something you didn’t know
PS3 has currently over 60 games available as of now, this time last year 360 had 54,
So stop moaning, and grow up, what idiot wouldn’t want a HD DVR??
And Sony & most developers are Japanese, hence why Playstation Eye(EYETOY2), Singstar & Buzz was announced because they are european (And was out years before the Wii, so don’t refer to them as Wii style games)
Most major announcements will happen in Japan @ TGS

Yeah there are some good games coming to PS3.
But why couldn’t Sony just shut up instead of promising us a “firework” at GC??
The people that are interested in GC or even know what it is are gamers, so why give such a bold statement when you’re not even showing a single new game?? All these games (Lair, Uncharted, Ratchet…) we know they were coming a long time ago…
They only ones who are reading gaming related news such as the GC firework statements are, you guessed it, gamers! So why does Sony always have to piss them off? I just don’t get it!
Comment by Berserker — Aug 23, 2007 @ 1:31 pm
@40 GAMES SONY!!!!! Where are the GAMES!!!!!! I want to play GAMES on my $800 GAME console…
Are you blind????? Read #44 and see the titles coming out in the not too distant future. Don’t tell me you haven’t heard of these coming out. (PS Bob, you forgot Assassin’s Creed)
And this is just the PS3 games. I still buy (like millions of others) PS2 games because I can play them on the PS3 as well. Or are you bored of them now already… Soon droves of PS3 games will be coming once Unreal T3 is out as the engine which Epic and Sony have been working on will be more readily available for other developers and tons of games will quickly come out (many good ones and some bad ones too no doubt).
Now this TV->HD announcement is FANTASTIC news. Like millions of others, I don’t have Sky, I don’t want to subscribe to Sky and I don’t already have a HDD recorder. So this for me is great. If you do already have Sky + or and HDD, then simply DON’T BUY IT… No one ever seems to complain when other manufacturers bring out a freeview viewer or some kind of system to record TV on your PC/Mac or whatever, so why is it that people do when Sony do anything for the PS3!? After all, I don’t want to watch TV in my office so why the heck would I want a DVD recorder on my computer? Now my PS3 is connected to my HDTV in my living room and makes perfect sense to me to use the PS3 hard drive to record TV and play it back too. Plus the wife can watch eastenders and I can sit on the same sofa and watch the footie streamed to my PSP (with luck). And we won’t have to miss bits of programmes either as we can pause live TV and watch in our own time (just like all the Sky+ subscribers are currently doing and enjoying at the moment but we aren’t).
And as for the Sat Nav for the PSP, that’s great too. I don’t have a Sat Nav but I wouldn’t mind one for the convenience sometimes. I don’t want to pay hundreds to get one, but I may get the extras for the PSP as surely it will be much cheaper. I had visions of the PSP being used as a Sat Nav ages ago and reality is here. Now they just need to incorporate a phone into it (using bluetooth headset), a decent digital camera (wouldn’t it be great to stick an SLR lens on the back and take shots with the PSP…), a video camera too (like the iMac has), a PDA (with touch screen and pen in future PSP models), and an alarm clock would be a nice touch too.

Shoot me for being wrong, but most gamers don’t want this crap. Do Sony listen to it’s customers.
Go on your own forums and listen to what people want. They don’t want sky they want decent games on PSN they want to stop wasting £30-40 on crap ported games.
They want information first on PSN not 3 month videos that have been on GT for ages.
We have been taking grief from 360 fan boys for months and i was hoping for something to feel good about. Honestly i really thought about a 360 yesterday.
What a royal disappointment GC was yesterday..
Jesus i was so angry yesterday, i hate M$ i don’t want to buy a 360 for gods sake wake up SONY.
Buzz for PS3!! Are you mad! Grrrr i want to kick a wall!!!
Comment by Anthonyp — Aug 23, 2007 @ 2:44 pm
If you ask me (which I know you didn’t but tough!), Sony’s big mistake has been naming the thing a PS3.
Calling something a Playstation 3 immediately conjures up the word ‘gaming’ above and beyond any other features they bundle it with. So the PS2 could play DVDs - great, but it hardly compares to what they’ve tried to do with the PS3.
If they’re being bold enough to try to push beyond what people traditionally think of when they see that black box under the TV, why haven’t they been bold enough to come up with a new name that better fits what they’re striving to accomplish?
At least then they wouldn’t have people bitching at them when they announce new stuff that isn’t to do with playing games.
Okay, calling it a Playstation gets a huge number of existing Sony customers foaming at the mouth with anticipation, but delivering something other than what those same customers who bought PS2s are drooling about is likely to piss more than a few of them off, and you end up with defensive comments like, “Oh but we’re trying to do so much more with this console than anyone’s ever done.”
Great, but we were kind of expecting a games console.
On another note, given how hard and expensive it’s been for developers to get to grips with the PS3 processor, it’s hardly surprising things have been quiet on the games front.
There’s a similar reason why Wii games have had varying receptions - games developers are still getting to grips with how to program for the control system in a way that doesn’t suck.
It also explains why 360 enjoys a raft of new and exciting title announcements every quarter - programming for the processor has been established further in advance and the control system is not quite as complex or expensive.
Comment by Gonuts — Aug 23, 2007 @ 3:39 pm
Just to clarify, I meant programming for the 360 processor and control system is not quite as complax or expensive, not just the control system!
Comment by Gonuts — Aug 23, 2007 @ 3:44 pm
This is brilliant news and good to hear the rumours were true.
I’ve been waiting for someone to provide a decent digital home/joined up media solution for ages and Sony have finally nailed it. After months trying to configure and use a Media Center PC with a 360 the PS3 comes along and makes the whole thing simple. Kudos for Sony for tying the whole thing together with the PSP too.
I do agree with others though. Sony need to shout about the PS3’s capabilities more. Upscaling DVD playback, Blu-Ray movies, media hub/network media player and now PVR. And yet nothing in the mainstream to educate people about this! Come on Sony. You’ve got a great machine - how about telling those who aren’t in the know.
Obviosly games are important here too though. In the UK PS3 games are still a good £10 more than 360 so they need to get more titles out and shed the perception of a ‘luxury’ pricetag.
Comment by Nick — Aug 23, 2007 @ 5:41 pm
sounds great! its nice to know that my 425quid paid for more than just a console! why do ppl do nothing but complain here? if u hate ur ps3 so much, y dont u sell it to some1 who appreciates the finer things in life- such as blu-ray movies, massive games on blu-ray discs (a 360 disc cant even store all the musical scores and sound effects from heavenly sword even such is the basic nature of its construction!)
i can remeber the ps1 and the ps2 being slow starters in the games category but it didnt stop them from dominating the market in the end, and theres no reason to see y it shouldnt follow suit this generation!
all u muppets that own ps3’s and slag it off are doing nothing but fanning the flames of xbox fanboys. so my question to u is- why didnt y either wait to buy when there are more games to lay? sony forced nobody to be early adopters! uv made ur choice, paid ur money and couldve done a lot worse believe me! i have owned 2 360’s in the past and the 2nd one just sat in my room and gathered dust cos i was playing a far superior games machine at the time- my ps2!
so stop whining and either- a, sell ur ps3 and shut the fuck up! or- b, be thankful uv got a powerhouse of a machine that will get better and better over time and shut the fuck up!
