More and more Heavenly Sword reviews are emerging on online gaming sites – most recent are IGN UK / US, Gamepro and EGM. Here’s a round up of most of the review scores so far. They’re quite a mixed bunch, such is the subjective nature of reviewing.
Edge Magazine: 60%
IGN UK: 7/10 (70%)
IGN US: 7/10 (70%)
PSW: 80%
EGM: 8, 8, 9 (85%)
Gamepro: 4.5/5 (90%)
Play Magazine: 100%
You can find what Three Speech thought of the game here. Also in Heavenly Sword news, we’ve got a bunch of new screenshots to share fresh from the Leipzig Games Convention in Germany

A very mixed bag of scores there, will be picking this up though as it looks rather good to me.. Shame the demo was too short!

Reviews are very mixed how ever out of all the reviews I have sceen the places that I would trust more have given it lower scores. I didnt think it was amaizing when i played the demo just ok, might still get it but not sure.

Most worryingly for myself, the Edge and IGN reviews suggest that it’s only 6 or 7 hours long. I’ve got it pre-ordered for £32, and even at that price I think it’s a little too short…

I’ve never seen a game get such crazy scores. Someone’s being a fanboy, and I think it’s the guys who’ve given it the lower scores, for the most part. For Edge magazine, you’d have to think the game was seriously broken to give it a 60%, and it’s clearly not from the demo. Maybe you think it’s too short, maybe it’s repetitive, but a 60%? Come on!

To be frank though, reviews are ultimately opinions - if your intrigued by Heavenly Sword, for a storyline and art style (in my opinion) that comes out as a breathe of fresh air in a videogame these days - go out and buy it, enjoy it and promote it to your friends.
Any word also on the concept art/art info?

It’s mainly because HS seems to be very short on content. It’s a very short, very samey game and no amount of quality mo-cap will change that.

Edge Scores:
0 = Shouldn’t have been released
5 = Average. So a 6 is above average and fans of the genre and people that have interest in the game will probably enjoy it. However its flawed in places. Adds nothing genuinely new to the genre. etc
10 = Revolutionary. There have been 4(?) 10s in edges history i think.
So yeah, I would trust Edge over the 100% given to it by Play Magazine. I’m still going to give HS a chance as I like this genre and i’m intersted in the technology they have used.

if you think its too short…play it first on hard!!
that should stick some longevity on it…
im getting the fucker, as i found out during the demo that throwing dead guys around with the first person view is great fun!

PAH! I know what the reviewers can do with their review scores :p
Imo, score based reviews are outdated, they’re just too polarised and limited - things aren’t as black or white, or inbetween to a simple scale of 10.
Gamesey.com will be pushing a new type of review in our next incarnation… keep an eye out for it
I’ve pre-ordered the game - can’t wait to play it!

That’s a crushing review from Edge! I will have to go out and buy this magazine to see the review for myself (or else just read it in my local WHSmith’s
) I’m very intrigued, I wonder what they didn’t like about it? (Apart from the short length, which has already been mentioned).

I think it looks wicked, I hope that the V sync issues are sorted out for the final version. I don’t understand how these people can even review the game, has the game gone gold yet? IMO I only trust GameSpot reviews (because they seem to be the most accurate) I will probaly pick this game up from an online store despite the scores anyway.

hmmmm I read the IGN reviews and didn’t agree with things they said about the gameplay after playing the demo myself. Edge’s review system is skewed because they gave Bioshock an 8 when most places give it 9.5 to perfect 10s. I’m thinking this will be an 8-8.5 out of ten with my only complaint being that its a short game. Played the demo, loved the graphics, gameplay, audio and presentation so I’ll definately be picking this one up.

How can anyone not be impressed by the demo? And it wasnt even a new demo, so improvements will have been made to the game in general. The battle system has many varients to it (I loved the grapples) and thats without the cool QTE combos that u can pull off.
Edge pointed out that they didnt give it a partiuclarly high score becuse it doesnt live up to the killer app status that MGS4, Killzone 2 etc. will probably do; plus the fact that theyre harsh reviewers anyway (Bioshock 8/10).
All these reviews of the big three (Warhawk, Lair, Heavenly Sword) are getting such mixed reviews; they cant all be right?
Comment by Will — Aug 28, 2007 @ 5:20 pm
well play lose my respect lol,
for something to have 100% it is perfect!
so they’re telling me this game has absolutley no flaws? lack of a jump button is one surely
will still be buying as the story looks very good, as well as the scenery!

what?? o what’s next sony paid for it, instead of it being a good game?
only really thick people would suspect that from so many websites…

EDGE doesn’t do percentage scores, so you must mean 6/10 (which in EDGE-speak means slightly better than average, but not much. They are harsh reviewers… even GTA3 only got 8/10).

@13
How can anyone be impressed by the demo?
Button mashing… Too short… Linear repetitive game play…. etc etc
I think to sum up edges review
Looks good but is ultimately shallow and short game.
Comment by DaveTheRave — Aug 29, 2007 @ 11:42 am
Well..not looking at the scores, and based purely on what the reviews wrote, the only complaint is that it’s too short. All other problems cited by reviews are countered by other reviews for example IGN though pacing sucked but Games Radar thought pacing was one of its best feature and best in action games. IGN hated the arrow guiding sequences, Games Radar found it wonderfully refreshing.
Comment by Robert — Aug 29, 2007 @ 7:54 pm
Same difference and pedantic I know, but Edge gave it a 6/10 - not 60%.
The review actually reads like a 7 or 8 game, Edge just don’t like it when production values move on, but gameplay doesn’t.
Comment by Stu — Aug 29, 2007 @ 8:10 pm
Well if in doubt rent it first, seriously you shouldnt listen to what other people say so much. 7 hours to me seems very short, but then people said Darkness was short and I found if you took your time and enjoyed it it lasted plenty long enough. Expect these reviewers were 360 fanboys…

Edge have always been a tough crowd, it’s part of what makes their reviews an enjoyable read. Got this on pre-order, really enjoyed the demo (dirtly little tease that it was) and can’t wait to get my mitts on the real thing.
