Right people, we love a good debate at Three Speech and thought we should open it out, so we’re going to start a number of irregular polls to find out what you think. To kick things off, we’re talking ‘Top Five Characters In Fighting Games’ and to start the debate we have ‘veteran’ (ha - sorry Steve) games writer Steve Boxer picking his favourites.
Would be great if you could post and discuss your Top Fives in the thread, of course, but to have your vote added to the final count, please email us at [email protected] and we can then post the full Three SPeech community results in the next week or so. If you could Put ‘Top Five Fighting Characters’ in the subject box that would be appreciated. If you have any ideas for further polls hit us on the email.
Over to Steve….
‘Purists look away – I wouldn’t class myself as a beat-em-up expert, and my selection is highly subjective. It also rather shows my age…
1. Nariko from Heavenly Sword. It’s sad, I know – she’s a game character -but she has firmly supplanted Lara Croft as an object of my lust. Quite possibly the most gorgeous female game character ever, and she kicks ass big-time. I recently met the actress who portrayed her (also lovely), and I think I may have scared her by explaining what a sex symbol she is about to become among teenage boys.
2. Shun Di from Virtua Fighter. The classic Drunken Master, he’s basically a stinky old soak who is often wont to lie down in the middle of a bout, and who actually improves the more he drinks. You always feel he’s taking the pee out of his opponents. What a fine premise around which to base a character in a beat-em-up.
3. The bear from Altered Beast. Sadly, Sega remade this arcade classic, which starts of with more than a whiff of homoeroticism, as you control a heavily muscled Adonis in a faux-ancient Greek setting. Luckily, you soon develop the ability to morph into giant animals, each with its special attack. The bear is way the best – he looks like an eight-foot-tall teddy-bear, but has a devastating breath attack. Think about it: bears live in woods, eating all manner of flesh, honey and so on. And they have no idea how to nip to the corner-shop for a bottle of Listerine.
4. Cammy from Street Fighter. OK, she may not be the best fighter, but she was supposedly trained as a commando in the UK, and she was played in the film by Kylie Minogue. ‘Nuff said.
5. Billy and Jimmy Lee from Double Dragon. OK, they may have looked more than a little ridiculous, with their huge heads, bouffant mullets and outfits that straddle the common ground between Justin Hawkins and Borat, but they provided me with vast amounts of satisfaction in the days when arcades ruled. Double Dragon was one of the first co-op games, and was the first I came across which would let you pick up and wield baseball bats, knives and whips.’

Here’s hoping people plump for characters from Waku Waku 7!

I will also show my “veteran-ness” by saying Ralf & Clark from the classic Ikari Warriors.
On hell of a game, and who cant think that Rambo-alike game characters are cool

*enter name of dead or alive female character here*
That pretty much sums it up

Just a quick list, I’m no expert but here goes. As you can see, I’m a bit rubbish with names. Good way to spend a lunch hour though…
1 - Guile (Streetfighter II) - It’s all about that hair, and the crazy upside-down kick thing he did. And the ’sonic-boom’. Still trying to forget Jean-Claude Van Damme’s portrayal.
2 - Lei Wulong (Tekken) - The Jackie Chan lookalike with the drunken style. Can’t seem to stop falling over, but makes it look so good. Unlike me on a Saturday night.
3 - Mr. K (Renegade III) - Showing my age, but probably my favourite old school beat ‘em up. Travelling through time armed with a deadly flying kick, the poor bloke tackles dinosaurs, mummies and lord knows what else. Mainly because I never got past the second level because it was hard as nails. Like the bloke himself. And I had to look his name up on Wikipedia.
4 - Kasumi (DOA2) - Chosen mainly for the fact that I could actually remember her name, Kasumi and her mates from DOA2 seemed to have one thing going for them. Well, two actually. Any games that includes an option for bouncing chests can’t be all bad. Seriously though, this was my girlfriend’s favourite game for ages, she put in the hours to win all the alternative costumes and everything. And she completely owns me on Tekken:DR.
5 - Cody & Guy (Final Fight) - I loved this in the arcades, and when I first discovered MAME on a lonely nightshift many moons ago, I played it all the way through to the end straight away. I’m still fighting the urge to kick bins just to see if there’s a roast chicken inside.

If Billy & Jimmy, Nariko and the like are getting involved (that is, not just beat em up characters), you GOT to be kidding me not including God of War’s Kratos, the ultimate warrior (without the awesome entrance music….. now I’m showing my age (”,) )

lol.
the year 2000 has just called, it wants its “E-Mail Poll” back!
Comment by d33p — Aug 31, 2007 @ 3:38 pm
Where’s the poll, or does that come later? There are so many characters we could pick that you might find the results difficult to report (yes, even if you chose to go with the top ones only.)
My selection:
Siegfried - Soul Blade - later editions began making him too heavy-handed, though this was probably a balance to the large reach of his blade.
Marshall Law - Tekken - I wonder what would happen if Bruce Lee could be in a fighting game? (although in later editions he branched out a little more to become less a homage to Lee, and more a full Tekken character)
I-No - Guilty Gear X2: Reload - This character’s just cool. Mix a stereotypical witch look with a thin female Japanese axe-wielder and there you have it!
Ruby Heart - Marvel vs. Capcom 2 - Why? Which other character do you know that can order a screen-filling ghost ship and all its fury in to the fray, to batter unfortunate enemies!
DMX - Def Jam Vendetta - He’s the top dog in the game, and has his own junkyard arena to boast about it from! Now, if only his in-game representation could have had decent taunts.

How about posting Super Puzzle fighter or taken online on the PSN so we can actually play them?

How has no-one mentioned Yoshimitsu yet?

Surely there’s only one clear winner here: Lizardman from Soulcalibur, right?
Comment by Gonuts — Sep 3, 2007 @ 2:27 pm
Guys, poll results as follows. Street Fighter got the most number of votes across the characters with Soul Calibur and Streets of Rage coming in close behind.

4. Chun Li - Street Fighter
5. Kokoro - DOA.
