News from Tokyo - the rumble feature is to be introduced for the PS3. The controller will keep the motion sensitive SIXAXIS and is expected to arrive in Spring 2008. For a hands on report and photographs head over to Kotaku.
Official press release follows.
DUALSHOCK®3 WIRELESS CONTROLLER WITH RUMBLE FEATURE TO BE INTRODUCED FOR PLAYSTATION®3
Tokyo, September 20, 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) today announced that it would release DUALSHOCK®3 Wireless Controller, a new controller for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3®) incorporating a rumble feature, in Japan in November as a separately sold accessory. It inherits the basic design and functionality of the popular
PlayStation® controller, while keeping the high-precision, high response motion sensitive sixaxis sensing system. Introduction to North American and European markets is expected in Spring 2008.
The added rumble feature, combined with the highly realistic motion sensitive sixaxis sensing system, takes gamers deeper into the world of interactivity, delivering a more intuitive, realistic and immersive game play experience. The new controller will also benefit PS3 content creators, by giving them the ability to further expand their creative imagination.
PS3 titles that are already in the market may become compatible with the rumble feature through software update. With DUALSHOCK 3 and the attractive lineup of PS3 titles incorporating the rumble feature, SCEI will introduce more new ways of enjoyment that can only be found on PS3, and will further redefine the world of entertainment.

Thats great thanks.
Comment by darkjedi — Sep 20, 2007 @ 10:29 am
I thought rumble was last gen technology?? according to phil harrison?? joke.
Comment by Bigsmoke — Sep 20, 2007 @ 10:30 am
Not that GT5P or GT5 support is that big of a deal.. Everyone should be playing with a Logitech G25
Hopefully this isn’t just rumble.. but instead the touch sense technology immersion hinted at earlier.

My question is: Why the hell do America and Europe have to wait until spring 2008 to get the new controller when Japan gets it in 2 months?!?! It is not as if there is any localisation to be done! It’s a really moronic strategy really, because no-one with any sense is going to go and buy a controller between now and the Dual-Shock 3’s release date, because everyone is going to want to get the superior controller. All Sony is doing is depriving itself of money, from controller sales, for the next 4 or months!
Comment by Mace — Sep 20, 2007 @ 10:35 am
Heres the main points from sony’s poor showing in toyko:
- Home delayed
- Dualshock 3 not coming to Europe until 2008 (have Sony not learned that this is a global market?)
- No price cut
- GT5 Prologue to be released in Jap this year.
Who on Earth is going to read that and think: “Yeah! I wasn’t convinced before, but now I want a PS3!”
Comment by Bigsmoke — Sep 20, 2007 @ 10:37 am
Well I’m definintely going to Import, I really really miss rumble features in games. Will be cool in Heavenly Sword (which I will definitely replay through with Rumble as I’m bound to want to go through it again anyway, really enjoying it so far). Will be cool in Warhawk too!
Comment by Jamie — Sep 20, 2007 @ 10:53 am
Rumble’s in the house! whoop whoop!,
Comment by linton — Sep 20, 2007 @ 10:59 am
At last! - here’s hoping for Guitar Hero 3 on PS3 - Motion sensing/Rumbling and wireless action
Comment by JohnSketch — Sep 20, 2007 @ 11:00 am
I will importo, looks like SCEE doesnt want anymore money from me.
BTW Where is the statement from Sony about why are Euro store sucks?
Also whats going on to the store tonight, I know loco roco but what else. I also the know blast factor add on has been delaayed october. So threespeech lied again.
Comment by carl — Sep 20, 2007 @ 11:03 am
Regarding the delay in getting dualshock out in the US and Europe maybe it is as simple as needing time to ramp up production? Could be that their main production site for instance will not be ready before Jan/Feb next year to start rolling out dualshock controllers and thus they decided to only launch it in Japan this year instead of having a situation globally where nobody can get the controllers as they are chronically sold out.
Comment by Christian — Sep 20, 2007 @ 11:33 am
So I’ll wait for a PS3 package with dualshock controller (and hopefully Ratchet & Clank).
Comment by Andreas — Sep 20, 2007 @ 11:36 am
wow the best of Ps3 in Tokyo Game Show 07.
That’s amazing :O
I’m joking, I think that nowadays I’ve wasted my money with PS3, no LBP, no Home, and now, a new controler with rumble, a thing of the past said sony in E3 06.
Comment by Roger — Sep 20, 2007 @ 11:38 am
So if the sixaxis is kept… when it will rumble in a game with motion control, the character will shake ? And what about the battery ? Will it go from 30 hours (with sixaxis) to 5 hours (with dualshock3) ?? Cause the battery can definitely not stand using so much energy.
Comment by Jenny — Sep 20, 2007 @ 11:50 am
so now we just gotta find somewhere to import them from, so we can have it for xmas.
Comment by Dante of Smeg — Sep 20, 2007 @ 12:16 pm
So, no rumble support for Colin McRae: DiRT?
Comment by Mothra — Sep 20, 2007 @ 1:21 pm
Seems like Sony is focusing more on Spring than Christmas.
No Home!
I imagine it won’t release till next Christmas.
Comment by Caleb — Sep 20, 2007 @ 1:22 pm
dirt will surely get a software patch ready for rumbel(if its not already hidden in there somewhere already!)

[…] (Almost a year and a half after the PlayStation 3 arrived in stores, Sony fans will get the controller they wanted all along. The rumble-ready, motion-sensitive DualShock 3 ships next spring.) The worst-kept secret on the Web is out: Sony confirmed last night the rumble-ready, motion-sensitive DualShock 3 is bound for the PlayStation 3 in spring 2008.No price yet, but Sony tells me the controller will work with PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games played on the PS3—so long as the original PS and PS2 games support rumble. It’s a good move. I guess. Sort of. Well, not really. The controller won’t arrive for about another six months, and it raises some ugly questions for Sony: Will customers save their pennies and wait to buy a PS3 next spring rather than this Christmas? Will early PS3 adopters feel cheated? Can Sony afford to lose another six months to Nintendo and Microsoft? And what does the DualShock 3 say about Sony’s roadmap for the PS3? Let’s rewind to February, when Sony’s Phil Harrison dismissed rumble and told GameDaily: “I believe that the SixAxis controller offers game designers and developers far more opportunity for future innovation than rumble ever did. “Now, rumble I think was the last-generation feature; it’s not the next-generation feature. I think motion sensitivity is.”I hope Sony’s got another bombshell to drop before the sun sets on the 2007 Tokyo Game Show; somehow, I don’t think the DualShock 3 is strong enough to rumble with Halo 3.UPDATE: Sony is scrambling to include rumble in PS3 games currently on the market. You can find the complete list of rumble-ready PS3 titles on Sony’s Three Speech blog. Hey ThreeSpeech!
Can you ask Sony why America and Japan are getting vibration this November and we’re not getting it til Spring? Cos a lot of us are pretty ticked off at being screwed over again! ^-^
Comment by Youlikeyams — Sep 20, 2007 @ 4:13 pm
they should of redesigned the triggers while they were at it
Comment by metallicorphan — Sep 20, 2007 @ 5:42 pm
I like the triggers. Good for MotorStorm and DiRT and the like. Better than the old buttons.
Comment by Youlikeyams — Sep 20, 2007 @ 5:51 pm
I take it we can trade in our six axis contollers to get a full £32.99 off the rumble controller that we wanted all along but were told it was impossible to include with motion control?
That is until Nintendo did exactly that and combined the two with the Wii’s controllers.
I am getting really sick of this crap from Sony. It gets worse and worse every week, I kid you not.
Comment by ton capone — Sep 20, 2007 @ 5:54 pm
… strange, I’m very happy about the return of Mister Rumble but… I still remember an official statement by Sony, just less than one month ago, they say no rumble feature under development for PS3 controller, neither in future.
at night when I go to sleep I feel bad if I lie all day long… this business/PR men are so lucky, maybe they have no coscience.
Comment by Garcian — Sep 20, 2007 @ 7:25 pm
It would be nice if we could get some kind of rebate where we can trade in our sixaxis controllers and get at least SOME money off of a Dualshock 3 purchase, but I am not going to hold my breath about that!
Comment by Mace — Sep 20, 2007 @ 7:28 pm
I, for one, thought Sony had some great stuff at this years TGS (check out PS3Fanboy.com). I do hope its Touchsense though.
Another thing is that they probably have to go through the whole FCC and UL certification (which takes a while) for it to become available in the US.
Comment by Dehshizknight — Sep 21, 2007 @ 3:31 am
Farcical.
Sony is being left woefully behind in a sh*tstorm of terrible PR, fuelled by uncoordinated, bumbling management that has done little to endear themselves to their customers or contribute meaningfully to the development of the games industry.
Comment by Gonuts — Sep 21, 2007 @ 2:21 pm
@ton capone
Why would you want a refund, you knew exactly what you were paying for when you bought it, it would be like trying to exchange your car for nothing because the new model has a bigger engine.
I bought 2 controllers on launch day, knowing full well that a rumble controller would come out in the future. So now I will buy 2 more, and have 4 controllers. 2 fully featured for every day play, and 4 for when friends come round for Fifa/Pro Evo.
Comment by John — Sep 21, 2007 @ 5:15 pm
Excuse me while I bend over and let Sony have their way with me.
Comment by Razor — Sep 21, 2007 @ 6:27 pm
well at least thats an extra feature the PS3 fans have been waiting for, they always said the controller wasn’t really the same when they shoved it up there ass without rumble
Comment by STARSBarry — Sep 21, 2007 @ 6:29 pm
Wow. I came here to troll the Sony Fanboys, but it looks like you lot are already pretty dissatisfied without my help.
Pip pip.

Not having rumble in the controller is stopping me from purchasing a PS3 with confidence.

To be honest I’m a little disappointed, I was hoping that because of the delay and the settlement of the Immersion lawsuit Sony would announce the SIXAXIS will ship with the superior TouchSense tech to one up the 360.
It would also help them worm out of the “rumble is last gen” statement, as that would technically be true as generic vibration is last gen and Touch Sense is this gen. It would also be a more justifiable reason to launch a new controller.
Unfortunately it sounds like it’s just the plain rumble out the PS2, but toned down a bit to use less battery.
I was really hoping that if they did do a mid life-cycle redesign they would be radical, touch sense and maybe even analogue sticks that pushed back against you (like the force feedback in the Logitech wheel). You could do some really cool things with that, like make it hard to push left in a racing game if your car is damaged, or make it harder to move in an FPS if you’re near death or something.
If anything this is a rush job to keep fans happy, I’d have sooner waited and got something really revolutionary than just have the last gen rumble tagged back on.
Also they’ve said this will be an optional accessory like the Eye or Remote Control, so don’t expect to see it as standard with the console for a while (it would cost them too much at the moment anyway).
I will get one, but I’m keeping my SIXAXIS as a spare, I’m worried that having dual motors will run the battery down far quicker, also some games just don’t need rumble…
Comment by Apnomis — Sep 21, 2007 @ 7:40 pm
Great ideas Apnomis, but sadly I can see what will happen. They will churn out a PS3 six axis controller with the PS2 rumble pack in so you have to shell out for that, then 6 months after that they will announce a touch sense controller like you have described and expect you to pay for that too.
It all adds up to an excellent excercise in fleecing the people you are supposed to be catering for.
Comment by Ton Capone — Sep 21, 2007 @ 10:25 pm
If you want wireless rumble, why wait a full 6 months for this controller that is only compatible with a handful games, when right now you can get a 3rd party controller for the PS2 and enjoy rumble with thousands of quality titles. At 1/4 of the price, with a huge catalog of existing and upcoming games and support for a wide variety of 3rd party peripherals, and built-in support for rumble, surely the PS2 is the true next-gen console.
Comment by Infi — Sep 22, 2007 @ 12:21 am
Seriously SONY…are you even trying anymore?
Comment by Chris — Sep 22, 2007 @ 10:48 pm
From http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3162991:
We did enjoy the various rumble effects employed by the new Dual Shock 3 controller, though: As explosions rattled around Snake, we could actually feel the direction from which they were coming based on what part of the controller virbated.
If we can believe this, Touchsense! Woo!
Comment by Geoff — Sep 23, 2007 @ 11:04 am
You fanboy’s really have no idea. You’re all so blissfully ignorant of the fact that some massive company is taking you all for a ride. A bit like microsoft. You all sit there whining about how it shud have come around earlier, and how you’re being shafted, but do you do anything about it?…nah…just stick some shit rehash sequel of a 4 year old game back into your george foreman 3 and keep bending over.

Any chance Sony can just stick to the truth instead of bullshitting us, I mean I was decent enough to pay £425 for my PS3 and all I have to show for it is Motorstorm, RFOM and WarHawk!
Comment by SlapnutzUK — Sep 25, 2007 @ 1:21 pm
@ John
No its not, its like being told specifically by the sales man this is the best car you can have for your money and they’re not releasing the Super Charged version because it’s not technically possible, then low and behold the very next day they do release that bigger, faster model.
And unless you work for Sonys legal department, no-one officially knew Sony would buckle and be able to release the dualshock3 at a later date, given all the hot air they spouted about Last Gen, so you can surely understand why most of us are annoyed by having to shell out again for something that should’ve been here from the very start.
Comment by Delmorpha — Sep 25, 2007 @ 5:30 pm
I’ll trade it in too! C’mon Sony - do something good for your customers, accept free trade-ins of the rumbleless controllers!
