Gamepro are running an interview with SCEA president Jack Tretton, in which he enthuses about the upcoming innovation heading to the PlayStation 3, citing that they have a longterm gameplan. There’s not much detail in the story yet, but Gamepro are promising a full transcript shortly.
“I don’t think we expected nor we need to capture the lifecycle of the PS3 in the first nine months,” he comments. “We want to build evangelists, one consumer at a time, and it involves sacrificing in the short term before paying off in the long term.”

Not cryptic “at all”, being honest out of the 3 current consoles I do believe PS3 will finish out top or at least a close second in the LONG run, for as XBOX receives its HALO franchises exclusive this week - you wonder if this is them peaking and for microsoft its downhill from here?
Just a thought though.

I’m completely confident that Playstation will come good. They’ve just got to keep talking to us, that’s all. Keep people like me beleiving and we’ll spread the word!
Comment by FrasierC — Sep 24, 2007 @ 11:17 am
@JS no i don’t think so, just look at gears of war and mass effect as 2 compeltely new IPs that came out before halo with more IPs on the way.

Thing is with 360 - So long as Microsoft is Microsoft, the ‘exclusive’ games will always go hand in hand with PC. There isn’t a 360 game yet which I’ve wanted enough and been patient enough to play on my humble PC. At least the PS3 exclusives don’t come out anywhere else.
Comment by Tony Nibbles — Sep 24, 2007 @ 11:51 am
@3 That is true - eagerly awaiting Mass Effect myself, but as console lifetimes and exclusives go - Halo was the BIG hitter - it’s the one little kids will be asking mummy to go get them or that celebrities will quote.
Other than Halo - they have no trademark title, although saying that Gears would be a close second - but you can understand what I’m getting at.

( BTW i am in no way fan boy for any console - each have merits unique to themselves, I own all 3, just stating an opinion above ^^ )

@14
yeah but apparently its been stripped of a load of stuff…some bizarre reason they have got rid of the USB connectors>>so say SKY(from CVG site)…how to charge your controller then i dont know…and it isnt Backwards compatible…again all from CVG reporting SKYs report
yeah looking forward more to mass effect,that looks fookin’ amazin’!!
360 still has some other titles i am interested in
lost odyssey as well
i am quite intrigued by Alan wake on the 360..that looks good
but then there is GTA4,with the 50meeelion downlaods again for the 360

Wasnt Alan Wake meant for PS3 - its designed by the people who did Max Payne right, is that another one thats defected to the dark side?
Comment by Terry — Sep 25, 2007 @ 9:03 am
@16 Mircosoft bought that studio, so they didnt defect.

Micro$oft scum!!

That CVG report from Sky News seems so wack. Lol as if they’d get rid of USB! You wouldn’t be able to use half the features (linux, GH, Playstation Eye) not to mention the Sixaxis charging. And backwards compatibility is software emulation so that makes no sense either. But I think those were just rubbish examples that the Sky News journalist was giving in his ignorance.
One thing that really annoys me about Sony is the mess they seem to make of the marketing and exercution of their features. There is a real hotch-potch of different SKUs for the PS3 and all it’s features are great but none seem to quite work properly, the streaming and stuff. I wish Sony were a bit more like apple in defining what the PS3 does and in streamlining the product lineup. Also announcing stuff nearer it’s release date might be better too.
As for the PS store, did anyone notice that the midway games went up 75% from £1.99 to £3.49, who would pay that for Rampart! Lol

Another weekly installment in the long-running saga of Sony’s bullsh*t and backtracking policy.
Translated in a specially developed bullsh*t filter, it means:
“Yeah, everyone’s probably waiting for the price to come down and more games to come out.”
Comment by Gonuts — Sep 25, 2007 @ 12:08 pm
@18, yes they are

Everyones saying “PS3 doesnt need blu-ray, its just too high tech and expensive”.
Do you honestly think that in 10 years time, people will still be using DVD for games?
Heavenly Sword is already filling a a blu-ray disk. This is 8 months after launch. Imagine 8 years after launch, could we be possibly hitting the 50GB/100GB mark?
Sony definitely made the PS3, with the future in mind.

@22 - that’s an interesting point.
If games are going to develop to the point where they end up being epic enough to take up 50GB/ 100GB then one of two (but ideally both) things needs to happen to make it viable:
1. Removable storage media needs to get bigger.
2. Broadband needs to get faster with greater capacity in order to deliver and cope with millions of people downloading huge games direct to their machines at the same time.
I think number one will continue to happen until broadband catches up. Beyond that, I think the future belongs to direct downloads.
In 8 years time the PS3 specs won’t look good enough on either front, though.
That, and Moore’s law seems set to continue for the foreseeable future.
I don’t think there’s such a freakin’ thing as “future proof” beyond more than a single-digit years. I see 10 year-old computers as relics, good for nostalgia purposes.
Comment by Gonuts — Sep 25, 2007 @ 5:14 pm
@23
PS3 needs to focus on the now, like you say I can see see new machines coming along within 5 years. I expect a 360 replacement is already in developement.
It was potentially stupid addopting Bluray befre it was established, if it were a hybrid between HDDVD and Bluray then yes thats future proof. Truth is neither is taking off yet, purely as its too damn expensive.
Comment by Terry — Sep 25, 2007 @ 5:28 pm
That’s how you create evangelists? You sacrifice them in the short term? Here I was thinking you got consumers to sell your product to their friends by making them happy with their purchase and keeping your promises.
Comment by warmwaterpenguin — Sep 28, 2007 @ 5:38 pm
OK, wake me when the console is £200 and has a dozen games worth buying the console for.
Until then…
