With the introduction of a new 40GB Playstation 3, sales have surged up 178% in the UK, according to sales tracker Chart Track. They also said that last week was the third biggest week in sales for the PS3 yet, only beaten by the first two weeks it went on sale.
The charts reflected this as well: Resistance climbed from 22 back up to 8, Heavenly Sword back up to 14 and Motorstorm from 23 to 18.
Who knows what will happen in the run up to this Christmas, but with games like Uncharted and Haze coming up, it’s not looking bad at all.

Its all good as long as we get ORANGE box and unreal t 3 before x mas

Thats postive news,
Now how about a surge of releases onto PSN to celebrate?

Yay

How about publishing the sales figures so we actually know how many of each is being sold. I get the impression the PS2 is still doing really well too
Comment by Charli3 — Oct 16, 2007 @ 6:46 pm
Hmm well its still a bitter pill to us early people. Won’t be falling for that again lol.
Comment by Terry — Oct 16, 2007 @ 6:57 pm
Of course, new model, sudden sales. Whether it’ll last is another thing entirely.
Comment by Benny — Oct 16, 2007 @ 6:58 pm
Excellent news, but 178% of what?
I mean what if they only sold 2 ps3’s prior to making this new calculation….
But no this is good news and will make more developers come to the fold. The only reason the 3fixme and the Wii do well is because they are hacked and people can leech the games easily.. I mean if people had o pay for the games then I am sure that the feedback in the last year for the ps3 would be amazing, no one admits to buying something dud do they!
So yeah bringing the price down for the cheapskate leechers to jump in is a good move but then I doubt they could afford the BR burner anyway.
LOL@ Number 2
PES2008 is still gonna suck tho but maybe they are under hyping it due to the irrational fanboys slateing (spelt wrong for the yanks to read it) the releases, every game is over hyped and fails to amuse most `gamers` so lets see, SEABASS’s interview was more ambiguous than a 3speech competition.

The wording of the increase is a little confusing…
Do they means 178% of last weeks sales (which you would expect), for example 10,000 previous sales would mean 17,800 last week)
Or with them saying “surging up 178%” do they mean a 178% INCREASE, that an EXTRA 178%, which would make 27,800 last week.
The wording of the stats can change the meaining significantly…
I’m guessing it’s the former, but the latter would be nice!

Double yay!

That’s great news! There’s never been a better time to get one - that’s the message Sony need to put across. Let’s hope they get the marketing of these games right. Ratchet wouldn’t look out of place advertised at the cinema and I’m sure it would attract a bigger audience to the PS3. And yes, there’s some good games coming out in time for Christmas but there are already some great ones out. Folklore is beautiful and Warhawk still rocks! I’m very happy with the selection of titles around at the moment. It’s a very different story to the launch week - when we all played Motorstorm and Resistance to death as there was nothing new for months.

Methinks with a surge for PS3 sales - the electricity bill is gonna make a lotta folk cry
Comment by JohnSketch — Oct 16, 2007 @ 9:17 pm
Sony need to maintain this momentum and maybe after Christmas think about release one or may 2 blockbuster games per month. This has the added advantage of giving gamers a month to save up for the next must have game on the PS3. I think the PS3 juggernaut is starting to pick up momentum and will see it consistently surpass Xbox 360 sales next year and by 2009 it will just be a race between Sony and Nintendo.

So that’s 178 units sold, at last, then.
Comment by Zed Zee — Oct 17, 2007 @ 12:49 am
…makes you wonder what the sales would have been if they launched at these prices….
Comment by BlueGene — Oct 17, 2007 @ 8:03 am
We’ll i won’t be buying the PS4 on release if they don’t have any decent games out.
Launch in the UK was a painful experience, so many delays and let downs. I’m scared for life lol
Comment by anthonyp — Oct 17, 2007 @ 8:28 am
Positive news of course. If nothing else, I hope this encourages more people who’ve purchased HDTV sets in the last 12 months to look at the PS3 as simply a great Blu-ray player. Movie studios need to start ramping up the number of movies they release on Blu-ray in 2008, release them at the same time or before the regular DVD and either drop the price or offer regular two for one deals like they are currently doing in the US. I have a suspcicion that many home cinema fans think that the PS3 can’t be as good as a stand alone player and that may be putting them off, as the standalone players are still quite expensive. How about a Blu-ray bundle that includes the bluetooth remote and voucher for 3 movies?

Don’t know how accurate these figures are - but they are for last week apparently.

great news for ps3 fans!
Comment by Emily — Oct 17, 2007 @ 10:47 am
Sorry, but why do I get the impression the increase in sales is largely due to people panicking that they will be unable to get a 60gb model and end up stuck with the 40gb ‘Basic’ PS3. I’ve asked around in blockbusters and a few games shops in my town, and it is indeed the 60gb version that people seem to be snapping up!
Shame on Sony for the farce that is the 40gb PS3
they should have just cut the price of the 60gb model, not muddy the waters by introducing this 40gb rubbish with missing hardware and backwards compatibility.
Comment by Mark Thompson — Oct 17, 2007 @ 11:58 am
I agree with Mark Thompson’s comments whole heartedly.
But I think what will happen is that they will soon introduce the 80GB model as well in the UK and Japan (if it’s not already out). Thus all three territories will get the same models and same spec.
Then sometime in the summer of next year or Xmas 2008, they will introduce an Elite competitor (in terms of HDD size, not other contrasts) and that will complete the range. Effectively, taking a leaf out of MS’s book.
The only question remains is BC. I think it’s a BIG mistake taking this out because BC promotes:
+ Brand loyalty.
+ Gamers can continue to play their old games and finish them.
+ Instantly available back catalogue to browse through.
+ Continued high sales of old games.
+ Burgeoning second hand market that business partners can benefit from.
+ More business for PSN, as old games can be downloaded by purchasing them, even PS1 games.
+ Official cheats that people can purchase for a very cheap price (£0.50p) off PSN.
+ Help me out guys…can you think of any more?
(Did not anyone from Sony sit down and put these on a PowerPoint slide and present them to Kaza?!)
The reasons for taking out BC are very murky. Where they claim it’s because of two chips (Emotion Engine and Graphhics Synthesiser), they’re not saying whether these required licensing, so by taking them out they saved money or not. This is what’s frustrating.
The original US/Japan models had both chips, Europe got one but not the other - the rest was done in software emu. Then US/Japan got the same deal and now all territories won’t have either!
So can’t it all be done through software instead? Or each game carries its own emulation (when downloaded from PSN) but uses a standard base emulator, with just some mods to make it specific to the game it’s helping to emulate?
Also, could they not have considered amalgamating both chips into one? Circuit board manufacturing often saves money in a product’s later life by doing just that - the PSone and slim PS2 are prime examples!
There’s every possibility that Sony could’ve done any of the above but they’re simply decided to p*ss off their brand loyal gamers instead…especially in Europe and for that reason alone, I refuse to buy into their disastrous PS3 strategy!!
Comment by Zed Zee — Oct 17, 2007 @ 12:40 pm
I agree with 15.
178% of what, exactly? That could mean anything. Until I see a concrete, honest statement that presents enough facts for me to form a valid opinion then I will refrain from believing a single word those soon to be redundant muppets at Sony choose to sling my way.
There’s no way you can make an informed judgement on PS3’s sales performance based on the publication of one figure, let alone a percentage!
It’s laughable.

Comment by mrsatansdojo — Oct 17, 2007 @ 2:48 pm
Also regarding @19 - Not sure, but I presume these sales figures only take into account four days of the ‘price drop’, so will be interesting to see the figures from 10-17th October when they are released.
On a side note, bought my 40gb PS3 last Friday & I’m loving it! Unboxing Sony consoles gives me such satisfaction. Shame I suck at GT HD Concept!
Comment by mrsatansdojo — Oct 17, 2007 @ 2:58 pm
@25
That goes some way to clearing this up, so thanks. Why it should take the efforts of us lot to dig around a story to find the facts while some lazy Sony press officer reproduces one chart track figure, is another story…
Comment by Gonuts — Oct 17, 2007 @ 3:46 pm
yes running up to x-mas,
we will find out that Singstar, home, little big planet is delayed.
lair is moved another month,
killzone2 X-mas 2008
Uncharted suddenly is delayed till januari.
Sony still neglects the EU-store,
but yes we do get some wallpapers
Comment by Darkie — Oct 17, 2007 @ 4:59 pm
@7, it’s 178% increase over the average of sales per week/month (dunno which) in the UK. I think. I hope. I also hope that in late November - December the sales will absolutely BURST the damn chart. cos Sony know how to play the gaming industry. I know one person that is gettin the 60GB PS3 for X-mas, but thats cos my age group and type of people i know aren’t really the type for gaming now, they think it’s kinda childish.
Well, one of my friends might get it after X-mas after price drop and if the 40GB price goes down.
Comment by MattyPwnsU — Oct 17, 2007 @ 5:20 pm
So, PS3 sales are up 178%. Amazing. Except that when you start being given percentage figures instead of actual sales figures you know someone is trying to hide something. You see, in the previous week PS3 only sold a measly 6700 machines. 20,000 less than the 360, so despite the increase it is still falling short by a long measure, shifting only about 18000 units. What’s worse for Sony, is that nearly 90% of those sales were for the
soon-to-be-discontinued 60GB backwards-compatible version. That is REALLY bad news for the senior executive that thought the public would want to buy a Chavtastic Gimped machine.
