cheers, like the idea of a ceramic colour ps3, perhaps that’ll be next
Comment by Major Belson — Nov 6, 2007 @ 1:52 pm
I want my new PS2 to be wafer thin with the ability to go head on with a Katana and win!
Price point if I recall correctly - $100 U.S. so that will probably mean around £69.99 U.K. knowing our luck,
Must say I like the idea that I can still purchase a new PS2 if my old one breaks - especially considering I still enjoy past PS2 games and not all are backwards compatible.
Comment by JohnSketch — Nov 6, 2007 @ 1:57 pm
@JohnSketch
If only $100 translated to £69.99! Knowing the UK it’ll probably be £100 if we’re lucky.

I was sure I bought a new PS2 recently - IN MY PS3!!! No room under telly, one box only please. Long live BC, PSM3 mag this month says to get out our old MGS2 copies which I will, my seven year old needs access to crash bandicoot etc….
Excuse my mood, but by Philps LCD has gone back for a new power button, no gaming for 10 days

It’s good to see Sony supporting their former product, which is in stark contrast to the abrubt and premature execution that Nintendo and Microsoft decided to go for.

Ah so that’s why BC in the PS3 is no longer important.
Comment by Ian — Nov 6, 2007 @ 3:43 pm
I think this is a pretty strange move as people will be selling there PS2 now, which I already have, so go to gamestation and pick one up for £30 if you want one.
Comment by BENNE77 — Nov 6, 2007 @ 4:06 pm
It looks a little bit strange without the typical ribbed front.
But nice to know that PS2 is still important.
Comment by Andreas — Nov 6, 2007 @ 4:24 pm
I think its cool that Sony appreciate the previous generation, Micro$oft killed the original ShowBox so quick people had no choice but to move to 360.
Comment by Terry — Nov 6, 2007 @ 5:23 pm
Will it have backwards compatibility with PS2 games?
Fnar fnar.
Comment by Joel — Nov 6, 2007 @ 5:40 pm
I hear it’ll be $99 in the US, and £75 over here. Which is poo considering the US dollar rate is way above $2/£. But then, we live in Rip Off Britain.
Comment by LordOfRuin — Nov 6, 2007 @ 5:54 pm
@£13 odds are though most places will retail it for £69/75 plus bundle in a free game or two to boost sales.
Comment by JohnSketch — Nov 6, 2007 @ 6:10 pm
will it actually come with the stands this time - i got well fed up with the previous versions coming with out the advertised stands!
Comment by linton — Nov 6, 2007 @ 6:15 pm
@Major Belson - PS3 Cermaic White is already announced and everything. Plus PS3 was originally shown off in black, white, and silver.
Plus I don’t see much of a difference save for the shiny stripe being removed, probably to cut on costs.
Comment by Youlikeyams — Nov 6, 2007 @ 6:27 pm
I dont see anything new..

I’m quite surprised there is a third hardware iteration for the PS2, still it looks OK I suppose.
Comment by Pete Cullen — Nov 6, 2007 @ 7:27 pm
i do like the look of these dinky ps2’s, when i first saw one i thought it was one of them chinese fake things. still have my trusty big black ps2 now fitted with a 7″ logitech screen. used mostly just as a CD player. i was offered 15 quid trade in on it so thought naw, better off keeping it.
Japan gets it’s ceramic white ps3 next week, and dualshock3. joypads on import anyone?
Comment by mobiletone — Nov 6, 2007 @ 8:58 pm
The US is $99 if the UK one is higher its because of the damn EU taxes and idiots in brussels and downing street.
Comment by anon — Nov 6, 2007 @ 10:23 pm
You were talking of Rip Off Britain, have you heard of Crazy Sweden then? I paid 6000 SEK, which converts to $920 USD (!!) at today’s rate, for just the ps3 60gb, not even a bundled game. And that was in 1st of August. Employee discount included, thanks to my friend.
Do they think we’re made of money, makes me sad.

I must agree with the comments made by “BENNE77″.
I really don’t understand why Sony is releasing yet another iteration of their previous gen console.
The current design - from all aspects - is just fine. I own a silver one, when I traded my big model years ago and as other people say on here, if you really don’t own one, then get yourself a second hand one, rather than a new one. There’s NOTHING new about this iteration at all. I’m sure no one cares about the PSU being inside or outside - it’s just not that significant.
Sony would NEVER contemplate releasing this new PS2 in time for Xmas, even if it’s ready, because it will obviously dent the already poor PS3 sales and cause even more confusion in the market.
But they should realise that their PlayStation fanbase is haemorrhaging towards the Wii or X360, while they pursue a pathetic strategy that’s causing confusion and desperation amongst loyal fans.
What do I mean by confusion? Well, just look at the SKUs for the PS3 and how badly that’s been handled in the recent past; full backwards compatibility, some backwards compatibility, no backwards compatibility - classic! Let alone the now legendary carpet-from-under-early-adopter-being-pulled stunt of dropping the price so shockingly quickly after the UK launch.
What do I mean by desperate? Well, there’s a rush by consumers to buy the 60GB PS3 in the UK, because it’s their ‘last chance’ to have backwards compatibility in the PS3, while the crippled 40GB model is being ignored; ask anyone in a GAME shop and you’ll get the same answer.
What of course consumers don’t realise is the very fact that even the backwards compatibility for the 60GB model is no longer being supported, so really, it’s all very tragic for PlayStation fans.
Is this what Sony want? Desperation shown by fans to buy something that they want (60GB PS3 for the backwards compatibility), rather than what Sony thinks they should have (no backwards compatibility and another redesign for the PS2)?
Price of the ’slimmer than slim’ PS2? Who the F*CK CARES ANY MORE?!!
Comment by Zed Zee — Nov 7, 2007 @ 12:35 am
@ Zed Zee … Amen to that!
Comment by Sion Walter Mowbray — Nov 7, 2007 @ 10:33 am
Great, now I’ll get even less money for my first generation PS2 when I get around to selling it on eBay!
Comment by reakt — Nov 7, 2007 @ 11:02 am
@15 the stand is redesigned and costs extra
@17 it looks very similar to the original slimline PS2 but it’s 1mm shorter and it weighs a lot less: 720g to the current model’s 850g. Sony has integrated the AC power brick into the new version

@23
Its to take the focus away from the new PS3 not doing backwards compatibility. Its working as nobody here is mentioning it.
