Three Speech reader and UT3 event attendee Murlphalus reports back from Thursday’s event in Birmingham.
‘After making myself known I was shown to the conference room where the PS3 demo was to take place. The room was set up with eight LAN linked systems and 42 inch Samsung LCD TV’s at the eye watering range of two feet but great for the experience.
To my pleasant surprise I was invited for some hands-on time which I indulged in with relish. First up “Deathmatch” Mode - UT3 delivers on every level, its fast colourful with lots of choice of guns and gun modes. Controls are very familiar to any FPS enthusiast and I was straight into the action in seconds. 10 out of 10.
Next up “Vehicle Capture the Flag”, team based action very much in the vane of Warhawk, and well up to spec. Vehicles get a little getting used to and it is possible to get then stuck, I found it best to abandon and move on. Vehicles then cover the usual mix of fast and vulnerable or slow and destructive, but all have something to offer.
A nice aspect is the “whisp arrows”. These are chevrons on the floor guiding you to your destination. Great for new players but switch offable like most other things for more experienced players. Lastly “Warfare” mode. During the presentation we were told that this is the favourite mode among the Epic development team and its easy to see why. Similar in concept to the linked base concepts seen in Killzone online and Fall of Man and possible unending fun.
Overall for work in progress a polished demonstration of the power of the Playstation 3 and a game engine being squeezed until it leaks.’

is it just me or did he seem completely underwhelmed by it?

I agree with first post - Where’s the excitement in the article
Lucky guy though - kudos to him.
Wish I had won….
Next time I’ll wear lucky Sandals!

Fingers crossed it’ll live up to the hype, and being a timed exclusive on consoles won’t do any harm either!

I think it sounds like he had a great time. I’m gutted it wasn’t me!

“UT3 delivers on every level”.
That’s great but WHEN IS IT COMING OUT?!
And how does the time exclusivity work if a game slips? Is there a limited time or does the other format releases slip back as well?
Somehow I doubt that, because Sony is keeping very quiet about answering this question. Almost seemingly avoiding it…

It’s because it was hardly an article.

It’s a reader view, not a journalists - it shows and it’s damn good to see Threespeech support this sort of posting, hear hear!

Sounds like he had a blast, jammy sod. Will you be sending him for an eye test after sitting him so close to the TV?

“Sony is keeping very quiet about answering this question. Almost seemingly avoiding it…”
The answer to that is…Sony don’t yet know. Mark Rein - vice-president of Epic Games, has stated that the PS3 version isn’t complete yet, but it is shaping up very nicley.
Epic are still hoping for a pre-Christmas release date according to a recent report from the San Francisco PC UT3 launch event:

EPIC has an overpowering motivation to make this game a PS3 AAA title : it’s a showcase of their 3D engine, whose licencing has been their major revenue for years?
Sounds like it shapes up good, even if FPS market saturation has gone beyong senseless.

I thought the article read quite well and to the point.
I’m looking forward to playing it, though I think I’ll have to use a keyboard and mouse. UT just won’t be the same without a K&M.
