It has been announced that DivX® video technology will be integrated into the PS3.
Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX commented, “We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring DivX to PS3. Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format.”
Current PS3 end users will be able to add DivX functionality to their systems via a separate system software update at a forthcoming date. PS3 game title developers will be able to utilise DivX’s decoder technology by updating the system software of PS3’s Software Development Kit to version 2.00.
Q+A to follow later.

Really really good news.

i’m a 360 owner, but this is a great feature and i seriously hope MS bring this to 360 too as i am fed up converting avis into wmv.
Comment by bitchain — Nov 13, 2007 @ 2:17 pm
Woah freaky coincidence *looks suspicious*
Just read up that Microsoft was in talks with the DivX boys aswell for the 360….
But I refuse to look a gift horse in the mouth (bad breath and it’ll eat me!) this is good news! as it means my legally owned films in divx format that are stored on my computer can be streamed via the web to myself on the toilet in japan
Comment by JohnSketch — Nov 13, 2007 @ 2:19 pm
V interesting and a great start, but DivX, Xvid and AC3 in AVI files is an absolute minimum to avoid riducule from the masses. There is an implication there this is a free OS update, clarity on that, and when approximately, would be good.
Oh, and in game messaging/chat, but lets say no more about that just now eh?

bless the psp.

Great news!!! Thanks.
Comment by darkjedi — Nov 13, 2007 @ 2:25 pm
cool
I heard that divx and xvid was coming with Home, but if we get divx before then that will be great.
JS, I take it you’ll be watching Critters then?
Comment by mrsatansdojo — Nov 13, 2007 @ 2:27 pm
A little light on the details, but if this supports AC3 5.1 pass-through and subtitle support, it is a dream come true. (well, that combined with subtitles and auto AAC5.1-> AC3 5.1 conversion in MP4 AVC files).
Slowly but surely it’s becoming a genuine media server, and it’s getting time to invest in some external DLNA network disk

“Q+A to follow later.”
should hopefully give us a bit more substance.
Comment by mrsatansdojo — Nov 13, 2007 @ 2:36 pm
So instead of having to convert my legally owned DivX AVIs using PS3 Video9, then copy them to the PS3, I’ll just be able to copy them over and watch?
Awesomeness.
Comment by Matt Smylie — Nov 13, 2007 @ 2:44 pm
Great news!
I hope xvid and other codec support follows too. Also, the playlisting (and folder management) features need a long way to go to improve.
Keep up the work!
Comment by Joel — Nov 13, 2007 @ 2:45 pm
will it now play my JCB tracks or what about the 1.6MGBGT format. I also fed up with converting my RSVP files to DVLC
Comment by Dan (BBRodriguez) — Nov 13, 2007 @ 2:47 pm
will be able to watch and download stage6 videos then? If yes this is the best add-on for ps3 yet but i am still waiting for sony to open a small port for developers to add their own plugins ad-ons to the system
Will this happen guys?
Comment by obaid — Nov 13, 2007 @ 2:54 pm

Just a thought for all you tech-savy types (I’m looking at you Xtc), I run Tversity on my PC and stream to my PS3.
Finding this pretty good at the moment as I believe it converts files automatically (plus you can burn straight to HDD). Does anyone know whether it works with other, more left-field video file types?

[…] Holy dog shit people. This is a feature begged for by the internet savvy crowd for both the Xbox 360 and PS3 since launch. Today, Sony has delivered in an announcement directly from the CEO of DivX. Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX commented, “We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring DivX to PS3. Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format.” […]

….”V interesting and a great start, but DivX, Xvid and AC3 in AVI files is an absolute minimum to avoid riducule from the masses”
@ 4 Does you mean that you don’t think this functionality will be available from the outset?
I currently use TVersity which works very well, but this will make the process even easier.
Comment by Lee Richards — Nov 13, 2007 @ 3:19 pm
@mrsatansdojo : I also run Tversity, but i don’t like transcoding as it completly messes up the source quality (which can already be questionable) and I need to run the PC to get to the files.
But, since it uses directshow, it pretty much transcodes anything you can play on that PC to the target format on the PS3.
What i like is being able to just store files on the PS3 (like with MP4 AVC files) or pop in a DVD with the files on it, or actually run a network/USB disk that supports DLNA (like a SPD8020CC/05 ), so I can switch of the PC when watching on the PS3.

These kind of agreements take a long time to close. I don’t think any party is “copying” the other, but responding to gamer outcry.

That is truly fantastic news, great job Sony.
Comment by MercuryLS — Nov 14, 2007 @ 2:46 am
I think it only makes sense for divxHD for. SD content using a ps3 to play is an overkill and national wastage (you consume more wattage). Statement in braces is to keep Mr Gore happy

I heard yesterday that IN-GAME XMB is being released with HOME so can ppl stop moaning
Comment by Sony Boy — Nov 14, 2007 @ 6:27 am
This is a really great announcement, just what media players have been crying out for since launch. It will be interesting though to see if Sony allow full AC3 5.1 surround, and if they do will they cripple it down to just stereo output.
Comment by AoSora — Nov 14, 2007 @ 8:48 am
Dear god. I’ll be stupidly happy if this happens. If this really does happen, our senses will be working overtime and i’ll become and extrovert. we can spend all day long watching videos and skylarking about.
there’ll be no language in my lungs to describe the effect itll have on how more desirable the ps3 will become. my house will be like the palace nonsuch
filled with oranges and lemons.
:D
