Yep deffo for me.
I am a Network Engineer for a MAJOR household name.
I am desperatlely trying to get into a game company. Sony is on my list in London.
What do I have to do to make this all happen? After all I would take a big salary drop to get into the arena.

Kind of advert that makes me wish I didn’t hate programming so much at uni!
Also makes me sad I can’t draw for toffee.

Its a shame the Network Engineer link is not a Network Engineering role tho.

@komp - read Edge magazine there’s loads of information about getting into the games industry, every month. I would also love to work in the industry.

YEAH some LBP news!
I did some remote work on some commercial games like Siege of Avalon ( now open sourced ) and Hero X ( I know, not exactly AAA ) a few years ago and it was very fun. The biggest buzz was seeing something I had worked on on a store shelf in Spain for SoA and Hong Kong for Hero X.
I’m also doing some remote work for a game company up North at the moment, but my skills are very niche and frankly my C/C++ is not what it should be.
One thing that seems endemic in the game industry is that the the management know that people love working on games and as such some teams work horrendous hours and get paid considerably lower than other sectors ( Investment Banking for example ). Most the time these guys are really pushing the envelope in computing constantly and don’t get the recognition and respect they deserve. Except maybe John Carmack.
[Rant Over]
YEAH some LBP news!

!!!!GRAPHIC DESIGN JOB PLEASE!!!!!
They did have one @ Mm not so long ago.
Comment by E-ROLE — Nov 27, 2007 @ 6:23 pm
So is this why it keeps getting delayed and/or theres no word on a release date? They’re understaffed? Lol.
Comment by tearsofash — Nov 27, 2007 @ 6:47 pm
@7: Seeing comments like yours I kinda make me think the game industry should learn from the Airline industry. In the eighties customers where very unhappy as flights kept being late. Scandinavian, soon followed by others, then started adding 15-30 minutes to each flight time estimation and voila; almost every airplane arrived on time or a little early and customer satisfication went through the ceiling.
So the game industry should, when they try to estimate their release times, just start adding between a year and a year and a half to their expected arrival dates. Then when their titles suddenly start coming out months earlier than expected, customers will be thrilled and no more complaints like yours
Trying to make honest estimates never pays, first of all you get complaining customers when you miss your dates and secondly people tend to underestimate so the honest estimates have a tendency to be to short. The games companies who actually make their deadlines are probably those with project leads who doubled all the time estimates he/she got from the coders before making a final estimate or those who prioritize deadlines over quality.

Christian - maybe they do have that in their estimation. The fact is that technologies are produced non-stop and sometimes you want to include something amazing you’ve seen recently in the scientific community. It would be fresh but it would take a few months to get a grip around it.
To be honest, I prefer having a delayed game than an unfinished product (PES)

I emailed these guys about doing some free work experience and ask them questions for my media A level coursework, and they never even replyed.

If only i had the programming skills, then it would have been an achievable dream goal.
Comment by Lean_go — Nov 28, 2007 @ 12:19 am
I would love to do that.
Comment by Tirminyl — Nov 28, 2007 @ 1:12 am
I won’t even bother applying - I work at a Network communications company and like to draw…..but without experience and something to show for it -
As the old British Commando ads went:
99.9% need not apply.
:(

Comment by BENNE77 — Nov 28, 2007 @ 10:48 am
Never did GCSE’s
I had Standard Grades! a far superior scottish set of exams!
Comment by JohnSketch — Nov 28, 2007 @ 11:21 am
I dont get it, surely LBP must be finished now and in testing… so whatever art you’d be doing it wouldnt be for this. Still, would be a nice job, better than mine lol.
Comment by Terry — Nov 28, 2007 @ 12:00 pm
@ Terry
Could be for DLC or expansion pack maybe.
Comment by mrsatansdojo — Nov 28, 2007 @ 12:34 pm
I reckon working behind the scenes would take away some of the magic for me - I’ll just keep playing the games instead. Not sure I want to mix business & pleasure.
All of which is a fancy way of saying I’m supremely underqualified for the job anyway.
