IGN are running a great piece looking at games development in the UK, rightly stating what a good year 07 was and what a promising one 08 looks set to be for homegrown titles, with MotorStorm, Heavenly Sword, Haze and, of course, LittleBigPlanet all getting mentions.

This is definitely a topic we’re keen to cover further in 08. Meantime, let us know your thoughts on games development in the UK. What’s the best homegrown game? Which ones are you most looking forward to? Does the future look rosy for development in this country? Are you looking to get into development? If so, what do you imagine the industry will have in store for you?

I believe Hull University do Game Development related courses, but don’t know if it is free or not.

Sébastien C., most “Game design” schools are 20 years ot of date in terms of what they teach you. You would be better getting a “proper” degree because most developers think “game design” schools are a joke.

There are apparently some very nice Game Design related courses going on in Stafford University - would have to double check on that but it’s at least something I heard in passing.

Terry > Thanks for the link
Carl > I agree with you, but i think that those schools are a great way to begin. Some of them propose training periods in very famous companies, such as Ubisoft or Electronic Arts. This is a fact that i couldn’t show on my CV by getting my own experience : /

I go at a Swedish Game Designer program and I think it’s great. Just about to start my second term here at LTU, Skellefteå and it sure seems promising with a lot of interesting courses. On the 22nd of January we are going to get at visit from Starbreeze and Avalanche, two of Swedens biggest game studios. It sure is very intresting and I hope that more school’s starts these sorts of courses all around Sweden and the world.

I wonder why Sheffield’s Sumo Digital were not mentioned in that article. Didn’t they release Virtua Tennis for PS3 last year? Maybe they don’t have anything being released this year.

The PS3 needs something like AMOS (a game creation package back in the Amiga days) - something to let hobby game makers create simple fun PS3 games and upload them to some sort of community site.
