Resistance was a launch title here in the UK when the PS3 first arrived last March. The game featured fast, frantic game play, great visuals and online battles and went on to become a best seller. It’s been rumoured for a while now that a sequel was in production but little has been known about the next instalment to the franchise. However, some information on the game has recently been released and it would seem Resistance 2 is further along in development than any of us had thought and is set to include a lot of great new features. Below we’ve some Resistance 2 screens from Game Informer. Check the Official PlayStation Magazine (UK) for more info when it comes out on February 13.
The game is said to feature:
A huge co-op component featuring eight player story-driven campaigns over PSN (two player local) alongside single-player campaigns.
Sixty player competitive modes with a focus on squad-versus-squad combat set in huge United States landscapes.
New enemies including Chameleon and Stalker with total cloaking ability
Multiplayer class system. Three basic templates - tank with heavy weaponry, special ops for distance (bullseye modified with zoom) and medic.
Online matching - standard difficulty discarded for scaled challenges for team skill.
Partially randomised geometry making levels different with each play through.
Insomniac have been listening to players complaints about the first game and are also further tapping the power of the PS3 to give more enemies onscreen and improved AI. They are also working on a solution to the long checkpoints and health system.
The game will be released later in 2008.

Looking forward to some high res screens…

Gonna kick so much ass

A lot of people only had this becuase it was bundled with their ps3. While it looks good the sales figures could flop this time.

The first one sucked soooooooooo bad i dont see this being any different 60 Man multiplayer sounds crap it will just be mad.
Comment by mat — Jan 14, 2008 @ 6:53 pm
@ Lean_go - not really. It was widely regarded as the best PS3 launch game along side Motorstorm. IGN gave it a 9.1 - admittedly slightly overrated, but still a bloody good game.

I sincerely hope that they realize a broad spectrum of colors and lighting in the next installment. I love brown as much as the next guy, but seriously, it doesn’t hurt to throw in some other colors
Comment by Justin Bailey — Jan 14, 2008 @ 7:08 pm
I agree with Justin, though judging from the pictures I’ve seen so far, they’ve got in a new lighting system which at least gives the places and creatures some added life. Also textures seem to be ‘cleaner’ which helps remove that drab look of the original.

Wow you brits are rough, i loved the first resistance it was creepy, dark and scary ass fun game i remember the first time i played this game i got so hooked it ended up being 3 in the morning when i stopped playing i didnt want to leave the light. if this game is as intense as the last one i guarentee i wont be putting it down.

I loved the local split-screen co-op campaign mode of RFoM1. I hope they keep that.

I hope this is kinda like Haze where you can have local AND online players in co-op to have a totally kick-arse campaign!
Comment by Dehshizknight — Jan 14, 2008 @ 9:15 pm
I can’t wait for this. Unlike others here, I thought the first game was great - especially for a launch title. The fact that there are still so many people playing it, even after CoD4, is testament to that.
In particular, it’s online capabilities have yet to be matched, let alone bettered. Squads and the Mute option are something CoD4’s online is in dire need of, plus the 40-player battles are simply amazing, and that feat alone has yet to be acheived in any other game on any other console. Plus, the comms are actually legible - something that can’t be said for the likes of CoD4 and Warhawk.
Bring it on, I say - greatly improved graphics (by the look of the screens), single player and online co-op campaigns, plus massive 60-player battles? Yessir, I’ll have some of that!

These images are scanned in from the magazine if I’m not mistaken. It will be nice to get some official screenies soon. Btw, Insomniac will be having their first podcast episode for this year of the Full Moon Show this Thursday the 17th of Jan. They will no doubt mention Resistance 2 and hopefull more details of what they are working on. So if you want to know more, check out the podcast @ http://www.insomniacgames.com/podcast/podcast.php

Resistance was a very good game the most played in my collection. It had a great campaign and online was awsome. I will be looking forward to the sequel

@15 : If they are planning to release they game in September 2008 or any time in 2008, they better be as close to in-game as possible, otherwise they won’t have enough time to get everything ready and shoehorned into the game before release.
PS. ThreeSpeech, can we have a “Reply To” button that also links to the comment you are replying to so that we can stop referring to people as numbers. We are not gorram numbers we are human beings. I think Kotaku’s implementation of this works well. Thanks.

I’m looking forward to this, I enjoyed the first game, yes it was a bit dull looking (especially if you play it now) but I think some of that was artistic intent. Personally it was one of the few FPS’s I’ve played all the way through, I thought the storyline and character development was very strong, it definitely warrants a sequel.
The new images look great, the Chimera look far scarier than they did in the first one, the graphics for early screenshots look amazing!
As for the multiplayer, having 60 is just amazing, if the maps are big enough 30 humans vs 30 Chimera battles could be fantastic, Warhawk’s biggest maps fit 32 quite comfortably, I think there would be room for more without overcrowding too.
Not sure about the 8 player co-op, unlike most people I don’t look to this as a key next gen feature, I hope the story doesn’t suffer because of the need to crow bar in 7 additionally extra characters (like Jericho). But it’s still another big achievement for the (free) PSN.
I’ve also heard this game is called Resistance: Rise of Man! If that is true my guess is that it will end on a cliff hanger and the third game will be set in Russia (the Chimeran base), and propably be called Resistance: Fall of Chimera!!!
In summary: Resistance: Fall of Man x Ratchet & Clank (level design/colour/variety/graphics) = AAA PS3 exclusive sequel!

This game is going to be totally amazing. 60 players online in a match, missions over PlayStation Network. It’ll also be interesting to see how much of the PS3’s power Insomniac will be able to tap this time.
Comment by HyperTails — Jan 15, 2008 @ 11:41 am
This is a no brainer. I absolutely loved the first game and goes down as one of my top FPS of all time. The new features(if they stay) sound amazing and am looking forward to what they can pump out of the PS3 as a 2nd generation game. I am currently hooked on COD4 at the moment so that will keep me busy till this drops. Then there is HAZE as well.. So many choices.:-)

If you were going to steal the whole damn thing from PS3Forums.com then the least you could have done was improve the terrible writing.
‘Single player campaigns’ Lol
‘Online matching - standard difficulty discarded for scaled challenges for team skill.’
What?

I’m going to use all this sci-fi FPS excitement to ask this question: When is Haze released?? Its release date is about as solid as Jon Heder.

I regret selling my copy of the first resistance, even more so that I got peanuts for it seeing as it was a bundled game. Any ideas on the plot for this one, from what I remember the Chimera or whatever they were had not got to America, they had attacked from the East right?
